About us
The Riverside County Department of Public Social Services (DPSS) provides services and assistance to protect and empower vulnerable people in our community. In 1923, with just two employees, Riverside County launched a public welfare program that now services over 1 million people each year! Nearly a century later, we are 4300 employees strong. We support working class individuals and families who are struggling with low income. We offer access to health care coverage, temporary financial assistance, employment programs and training, and services that protect children and adults from abuse and neglect. We do all of this through our five departments: Administration, Adult Services, Children’s Services, Self Sufficiency, and Fiscal and Forecasting. Our mission is to support and improve the health, safety, well-being and independence of our county’s individuals and families. We work according to 7 values: Accountability, Collaboration, Respect, Integrity, Diversity, Learning and Customer Focus. We strive to be an organization known by our caring professionals who collaborate with the best partners to provide the most effective solutions to customers and individuals and families in crisis.

"For us, adoption brings peace. It’s about growing as a family. With our kids, we’ve built relationships with their biological families—so we’re not only growing but also showing that we’re here for them, forever." – Skyler Holt, Riverside County adoptive parent "We don’t call it Adoption Day; we call it Ohana Day because ‘ohana’ means family in Hawaiian. It’s a full commitment, like a wedding day, and it’s about adding more people to love and support a child." – Nicole Holt, Riverside County adoptive parent Adoption is a journey of love, connection, and commitment. From building bonds with biological families to creating new traditions, it’s a lifelong promise to be there for a child. 💛 Are you ready to grow your family and make a lasting impact on a young person’s life? “We’ve adopted in our hearts for a long time, but today is the official day, and we are so excited. We have three biological kids—20, 19, and 11—and we’re also fostering. We wanted to help the system by fostering, and when our adopted son’s family couldn’t step forward, we decided we would.” – Jesse Amaya, Riverside County adoptive parent “Even though our adopted son is not our biological child, he is now our forever child. He grew in our hearts, and I’m so happy because our older kids love him like their brother. It’s been a great process.” – Teresa Amaya, Riverside County adoptive parent During #NationalAdoptionMonth, we are inspired by families like the Amayas, who open their hearts and homes to children in need. “Adopting my grandson wasn’t something I had planned, but I wanted to do it. It wasn’t easy, but I did it, and the process went quickly. People need to understand that these kids are the ones who are suffering—it’s not their fault, and we need to step in to help them. Foster care is only a temporary solution; they need a place to call home.” 🏠 – Claudia Wechter, Riverside County adoptive parent 🌟 This #NationalAdoptionMonth, take the first step toward giving a child a place to call home forever.
