💡 EU to Focus Research Funding on Strategic Technologies to Boost Competitiveness This follows European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen unveiled a new EU competitiveness plan, stating her ambition to “reignite Europe’s innovation engine.” on 29 January. The strategy’s focus on applied research—rather than fundamental research—is raising concerns among universities. According to Julien Chicot, Head of #Research and #Innovation Policy at The Guild of European Research-Intensive Universities, this shift is “worrying” because it overlooks the importance of basic research. Distance from the bear. 🐻 The Economist with one way to visualize European defense spending. I was a panelist at a conference last year on deeptech investing, and the subject of defense came up. When it came time for Q&A at the end, one of the audience members - an Italian scientist - said he didn’t see a point in Europe spending more on security and defense as “no one would go to war in Europe”. When it was pointed out that there is currently a war happening in Europe he blurted back “where?”. I told him Ukraine, to which he responded “that’s not really Europe.” It goes to show that distance from the bear does matter…and that scientists are often in their own little world.
