The environments where we live, work, and play significantly influence our health outcomes. Known as the social determinants of health (SDOH), these factors—like access to safe housing, nutritious food, quality education, and stable employment—powerfully affect our well-being and ability to thrive. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention emphasizes that addressing these determinants isn’t just about improving health; it’s about advancing health equity. When we tackle barriers like economic instability and unequal access to resources, we create a foundation for healthier communities and more opportunities for everyone. On this last day of the week, we highlight our final area of service - RS EDEN's work in Criminal Justice Support. In 2023, RS EDEN staff assisted approximately 800 men and women who were exiting an incarcerated situation - or were involved within the criminal justice system. With that, we provided the full range of our services - recovery, mental health services, as well as supportive housing. Our work assists these men and women to find the on-going support to reenter society, to find employment or education opportunities, and to have a place to call home. Every year - RS EDEN serves over 1,700 men, women and families through all our facets of programming. Providing safe, affordable and supportive housing is the largest area of service that RS EDEN offers. Last year, within our 19 campuses, we provided safe homes to over 800 adults and children - who achieved safe and stable housing after exiting histories of chronic homelessness. Over the last several years, RS EDEN has fully integrated Mental Health Services across all areas of programming within our agency. Rarely do we see that any one of our participants come to us and "only" needs support within their recovery, reentry, or housing journeys. With our person-centered approach to services, we understand how past trauma and personal struggles impact all areas of someone's life. With our dedicated and compassionate team - we assist our participants to find health and stability - and build their new beginning. RS EDEN's first foundational area of service was RECOVERY. In 1971, we began our work with veterans returning from Vietnam who were struggling with addiction. From that, RS EDEN has evolved and become the robust programming that includes out-patient, residential, and our newest addition - the Withdrawal Management Program. It is through this full scope of services that in 2023, we served over 500 men and women on their path to health and sobriety. Additionally, supporting the community and our participants, RSI Laboratories provided over 220,000 drug screenings in support of prevention and intervention. One year ago, RS EDEN created a one-of-a-kind withdrawal management opportunity within the Twin Cities. This unique "detox" program serves men and women - and is located in the heart of downtown Minneapolis. In our first year, we have assisted so many to begin their paths to sobriety.
