The Memorial Amphitheater at Arlington National Cemetery (ANC) is a highly visible and sacred site in the United States that serves honorary, ceremonial, and operational functions. The Amphitheater, dedicated in 1920, contains seating for about 5,000 people. In preparation for the 100th anniversary of the dedication of the Tomb of the Unknown Solider, RS&H, as part of a joint venture, provided field investigations and multi-discipline design services for the Amphitheater and plaza that surrounds the Tomb of the Unknown Solider to identify areas that needed to be cleaned, repointed and preserved, and to incorporate accessibility improvements and accommodations. Preserving historic structures presents several challenges for architects, requiring a delicate balance between maintaining historical integrity and accommodating modern needs. Key challenges include regulatory compliance, material limitations, structural integrity, modernization needs, budget constraints, and public and stakeholder expectations. This project required close coordination with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Norfolk District (USACE), ANC, and the National Park Service (NPS). Balancing the need for modern amenities and safety features with the preservation of historical elements was a significant challenge that this project presented with the need to upgrade the accessibility accommodations of the 100-year-old facility without detracting from the stateliness of the Amphitheater’s historic beauty. To achieve this goal, RS&H conducted field investigations and developed an ABA/ADA-compliant switch-back ramp and Amphitheater box seating, incorporating materials approved by ANC and USACE. The design and installation of all ramps allow for their future removal, if needed. This approach was taken to maintain the functionality of the Amphitheater without causing any damage to the existing structure or materials. The original marble was reused where possible and matching marble specified otherwise. “Our approach involves meticulous planning and execution to confirm that every aspect of the project respects Arlington National Cemetery’s heritage and mission,” said Kerry Felton, AIA, Federal Architect. “We collaborated closely with design partners and stakeholders to verify that our designs aligned with the historical context and met the stringent standards required for such a revered site to honor the legacy of those who have served while providing for the site's ongoing needs.” #driventocare #wearersandh #employeeowned #architecture #ArlingtonNationalCemetery #MemorialAmphitheater #HistoricPreservation #USArmyCorps #NationalParkService #TombOfTheUnknownSoldier

The Crosstown Parkway Extension project in Port St. Lucie, FL was a groundbreaking initiative that included a third bridge crossing on the North Fork of the St. Lucie River. This project was a testament to innovation and community enhancement. 🔵 Environmental Stewardship: The bridge traverses a highly environmentally sensitive area, minimizing wetland impacts and protecting the Savannas Preserve State Park. 🔵 Multi-Modal Transportation: The new six-lane divided highway and bridge serve as a critical hurricane evacuation route and offer automobile, bicycle, pedestrian, and public transit accommodations. It even includes an ADA-accessible canoe launch area. 🔵 Innovative Design: The superstreet intersection at Crosstown Parkway and Floresta Drive, the first of its kind in Florida, significantly reduces travel time and improves safety. RS&H and the entire design-build team delivered the project nearly $15M below budget without sacrificing community features. We are proud of the positive impact this project has on enhancing transportation efficiency and safety while preserving our natural environment. #driventocare #transportation #Florida

At the intersection of innovation and partnership, RS&H delivers solutions that empower both communities and missions. The Alpena County Regional Airport Runway 1-19 Rehabilitation represents our commitment to purpose-driven infrastructure by repairing concrete pavements used by the Combat Readiness Training Center (CRTC).
