Their investigations employ a diverse set of advanced techniques, such as multi-omics analysis, laser microdissection, and gut-on-a-chip models. Antton serves as the coordinator for the H2020 RIA project 3D'omics, and he is the founder of the Earth Hologenome Initiative.   Antton is the coordinator of the H2020 EU project 3D’omics, which focuses on developing micro-scale multi-omic analysis methodologies to understand the spatial structure and functioning of gut microbiomes 💡 This first session will introduce the EcoGen Cluster and its five pioneering projects and set the stage for interdisciplinary collaboration, exploring how integrated research on breeding, genetics, and -omics can drive more resilient and sustainable livestock production.  💻 Format: Online Webinar 👥 Who Should Attend? Meet speaker Eric Pailhoux from the RUMIGEN project. Eric Pailhoux is a Director of Research in Reproductive and Developmental Animal Biology at INRAE, France. Specializing in sex determination and gonad differentiation in mammals, he has applied genome editing to study sex-determining genes in farm animals. A co-creator and coordinator of the RUMIGEN project, he leads efforts in epigenetics and breeding innovations, working closely with colleagues at INRAE and ELIANCE. Meet speaker Frédérique Pitel from the GEroNIMO project: Frédérique Pitel is a senior scientist at the French National Research Institute for Agriculture, Food and Environment (INRAE) in Toulouse (France). After a master degree in animal production science at the National High School of Agronomy in Rennes, she obtained a PhD from Université de Rennes, France. Prior to the current position she was a research associate in the poultry genomics team (INRAE Occitanie-Toulouse). She participated in the development of genetic and cytogenetic maps in chicken, and took part in the duck and quail genome sequencing consortia. She conducted programs on mapping genomic regions involved in traits of zootechnical or biomedical interests. Her research now focuses on understanding the genetic and epigenetic processes underlying livestock phenotypes, mainly in avian species. 🚀 CRISPR/Cas9 Gene Editing in Alpine Goats: Advancing Prion Disease Resistance 🧬🐐 Prion diseases are fatal neurodegenerative disorders affecting many species, including goats. Researchers have used CRISPR/Cas9 to knock out the PRNP gene, which encodes the prion protein, to explore genetic resistance and assess potential health impacts. 🔬 Key findings: ✅ Genome editing produced 8 PRNP-edited founder goats ✅ 5 goats carried KO mutations, showing normal phenotypes ✅ A PRNP-KO male is now being used to develop a resistant goat line ✅ A novel PRNPdel6 variant was discovered, with resistance potential under investigation While PRNP KO has shown promise, previous studies in Norwegian goats highlighted possible risks like myelination defects and immune changes.
