#flashbackfriday what was once the Peebles Department store in Lawrenceville, VA is being transformed by developer Stephen Staats into a mixed use building consisting of commercial and retail space as well as a mix of apartment sizes. Our team has seen this project through the various stages of review with The Virginia Department of Historic Resources, schematic design and test fits of apartment layouts, all the way up to construction documentation and now the construction phase. Good Ship Brewing & Eatery is underway to become the newest brewery and restaurant in Hopewell, VA! The existing abandoned building will be renovated to include a fully functioning kitchen, brewery with production area, and bar. Outside, the space will be transformed into an entertainment area with fire pits, Bocce ball and corn hole courts, a mobile pizza oven, and a stage for live performances. What was once intended to be an adaptive reuse project before the historic building was lost to a hurricane, is now the new construction of a cluster of garden style apartments called The Royster. In collaboration with Waukeshaw Development Inc., our team has designed these apartment buildings with the scale and language of the surrounding area and residences in mind. These wood construction, two story buildings will feature one bedroom apartments accessed off of covered outdoor walkways and decks, as well as a first floor commercial space which faces Virginia Avenue. Construction is underway on site, with various buildings in differing stages of construction. Part way through the renovations at the Weinstein Jewish Community Center, we are reflecting back on the renderings that first brought the vision to life. From interior finishes to custom casework, a new covered stair to new or expanded spaces throughout admin. and educational programs, this renovation has a little of everything. A large scale renovation with multiple phases, this project required a thorough look into the users of the various building programs and their needs on a day to day basis. Happy to collaborate with Cite Design to teach some high schoolers about LEED!
This past school year, Cite Design volunteered with students in Heather Veneziano's Landscaping course at the ACE Center at Virginia Randolph. The students learned about landscape architecture, the design process, and then implemented their knowledge by creating their own schematic design proposals for the campus renovations happening at VA Randolph. We were impressed by their designs and final presentations to a panel of representatives from Henrico County Public Schools, Henrico County Planning, and more. We hope to see some of their designs on campus soon. A huge thanks to Benjamin Oberhand and Johanna Scogin, AIA, LEED AP who accepted the invitation to share more about their disciplines with the students, helping to make their designs more well-rounded. Their campus is getting completely renovated and the students are working on some landscaping and garden designs that could go towards some of the LEED credits.
