The Sacramento City Unified School District provides all students the knowledge, skills, and educational opportunities to achieve high academic standards and be successful in a changing global society.
Sacramento City Unified School District is one of the oldest K-12 districts in the western United States (established in 1854). SCUSD serves 42,231 students on 75 campuses spanning 70 square miles.
SCUSD is home to three Public Waldorf schools (George Washington Carver, Alice Birney and AM Winn) and the only Hmong language immersion program in the state (Susan B. Anthony Elementary School).
Alumni from SCUSD’s schools include former U.S. Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy, California Supreme Court Chief Justice Tani Cantil-Sakauye, nationally renowned political scholar Dr. Cornel West and author Joan Didion. Recent graduates from SCUSD are currently attending Harvard, Stanford, UC Berkeley, UC Davis and host of other prestigious universities.
Our Board-adopted mission statement promises the community that our students will “graduate as globally competitive life-long learners, prepared to succeed in a career and higher education institution of their choice to secure gainful employment and contribute to society.”
SCUSD’s students reflect the rich diversity that is the hallmark of Sacramento’s central city. Our student population is 40 percent Hispanic or Latino; 17 percent Asian; 14 percent African American; and 18 percent white. About 7 percent of students are of two or more races or ethnicities. Residents within SCUSD speak more than 51 languages.
Our mobile movie night at a local motel where many of our unhoused families are currently residing was a blockbuster hit! Way to go to our Homeless Education Services Program staff for pulling together popcorn, hot food, blankets, and entertainment for our wonderful unhoused students and their caregivers.
Schools and district offices will be closed December 23 through January 3. We hope that all of our staff and students enjoy a restful winter break! We'll see you back at school on Monday, January 6.
This week, Food Literacy Center hosted a series of pop-up kids holiday farmers markets at Woodbine, Susan B. Anthony, and James Marshall. Students shopped for produce with veggie bucks, and learned about new vegetables they had never tried before! All the students took home big bags of fresh produce to their families for the holiday season.

At the December 19 meeting of the Sacramento City Unified School District Board, the Board recognized five students who attend Arthur A. Benjamin Health Professions High School as SCUSD Stellar Students: Tayler Sadler, Kayla Yang, Aydrien Tacuri, Joshua Mbah, and Luz Pascual.
These five students consistently rank at the top of their class academically and serve as active agents of change within our school culture. They volunteer for community events and take an active role in organizing school activities. They advocate for their classmates, to ensure that all voices are heard, and work diligently to provide quality services for all students. Their teachers and school staff take pride in their achievements and contributions to their school community.
There's still time to contribute to our Spirit of Giving Drive, if you can! We are collecting necessities for our unhoused students and families to help them stay warm, clean, and fed this holiday season. We need new blankets, pantry staples, kids' snacks, and hygiene items. Please bring donations to the Serna Center at 5735 47th Ave. through 5pm Friday, December 20.
You can also donate to our Kindness Campaign through December 20 and beyond! Monetary donations help us to sustain support for our unhoused students and families all year long. Give at https://lnkd.in/gDp3yWzW
Thank you so much if you've already given, we appreciate all the wonderful donations for our school community experiencing homelessness!
Thank you to Balfour Betty, a construction company that is working on rebuilding Edward Kemble and Cesar Chavez. They hosted a holiday drive, and provided 600 new hoodies and sweatshirts to our students!
