"The word “impossible” doesn’t exist for me... I love it when things don’t work; it leaves room for something else that’s going to happen next. I live my whole life that way." — Amy Sherald Read Sherald's CULTURED Magazine interview with Jon Batiste: https://lnkd.in/gub-fxDK Come see her first mid-career survey, "Amy Sherald: American Sublime" now on view at SFMOMA. #AmySherald #CultureddMagazine #SanFrancisco #BayArea #Museums

Dedicated to making the art of our time a vital and meaningful part of public life.
About us
Art transforms lives. It provokes us to think, to express, to explore our own creativity, to envision new possibilities. SFMOMA expanded the museum to provide a better experience for our visitors and a better home for our expanding collections, including the SFMOMA collection and the Fisher Collection, one of the finest collections of contemporary art in the world. The new SFMOMA, designed in collaboration with the architecture firm Snøhetta, opened May 2016. With this project, we are transforming not just the museum's physical presence, but also our contributions to the community, enhancing SFMOMA's role as a place for learning, inspiration, and interaction for visitors from the Bay Area and beyond. We are making SFMOMA a magnet for contemporary art and for the audiences who will engage with it. Happy birthday to our museum's founding director, Grace McCann Morley! 🎂 A determined supporter of avant-garde art and artists, Morley also believed passionately that art should be available to everyone. “If art of today is today overlooked, or misunderstood, the loss is serious," she wrote. "Art fails, then, to give its full value to daily life." Fun fact: When Morley presented a retrospective of Picasso's work in 1940, the exhibition was met with such great interest that on the last day of its run, thirteen hundred visitors sat down in the galleries and refused to leave “until they had had their fill.” The event was reported in more than fifty newspapers across the country! Photo 1: Morley with Henri Matisse’s “Young Sailor II” (1906). Photo 2: Portait of Morley, ca. 1935. Photo 3: Grace McCann Morley; Mario Illanes, Chilean Consul; Jose Perotti Exhibition Commissioner; and Mrs. Illanes at the opening of the exhibition Chilean Contemporary Art, 1942.
