Acknowledge: Show that you’ve heard the other person’s concerns. 2. Pivot: Gently steer the conversation toward your key message. Avoid unproductive debates. 3. Answer: Share your message in a way that reflects your goals. Stay clear and focused. 4. Reacknowledge. End on a note of respect and mutual understanding. “I appreciate this conversation, and I’m glad we could share perspectives.” Breaking the ice can be the hardest part. Discussions often come with differences of opinion, misunderstandings, or emotional tension. But they’re also essential for connection, creating change, and finding common ground. Together, we can create a culture change for safer schools, homes, and communities.

The Say Something Anonymous Reporting System was used yesterday in Connecticut to alert staff about a potential threat at Portland Middle School, which turned out to be a hoax. We are grateful to the brave student who submitted the tip, the trusted adults involved, and law enforcement for helping avert a potential tragedy.
