In his own words: a conversation with our founder 🌟 Every week we’re sharing excerpts from our exclusive interview with Neil Schlager. Today he discusses how the company’s Schlager Digital Library platform addresses an essential issue across higher education: the affordability of instructional resources for students. 💡 https://lnkd.in/g3rwzs2Y "Because the Schlager Digital Library works at the intersection of research/reference and course materials, it aligns with institutional efforts surrounding textbook affordability." 100% DRM-free with unlimited downloads and simultaneous users, "the collection functions for faculty and students like an Open Educational Resource (OER)." Thanks to Michael Rodriguez for the mention in this excellent article about small publishers building their own ebook platforms, as we have done at Schlager Group Publishing. Really useful insights here from David Parker and Charles Watkinson, among others. My only quibble: the large ebook aggregators can and do take well more than 30% of sales--in some cases its double that amount. Of the aggregators we work with, none take lower than 50%, with some taking a whopping 60%. This seriously hinders our ability to reinvest in our products, which of course is why we built our own platform with the help of Newgen KnowledgeWorks. We are finding, however, that libraries are open to purchasing directly from small publishers as long as the platforms meet their technical needs. It's not easy on that front, as there are a host of hurdles to overcome, but it is possible. Here's to a future where the scholarly information ecosystem is more balanced, and where libraries and publishers of all sizes can work together to disseminate information for students and researchers. #libraries #ebooks https://lnkd.in/gMNh99z8
