⭐ A Schuyler Center week in Review: Tax credits were at the forefront of our work this week starting with attending the Working Families Tax Credit rally on Monday! Yesterday we delivered testimony at the joint-hearing on taxes in which we emphasized the impact of the child tax credit here in New York State and how vital its expansion would be to our youngest New Yorkers. Read our testimony: https://lnkd.in/gbSrsBD8 We hosted a child welfare briefing on Monday with a discussion focused on top child welfare priorities in New York’s budget, including the Child and Family Wellbeing Fund and the Foster Youth College Success Initiative. On Tuesday Schuyler staff attended the New York Anti-Hunger Advocacy Day to advocate for investments in SNAP and universal school meals. This week the Empire State Campaign for Child Care also released the results of their survey on the child care workforce shortage. Advocates and legislators called on the inclusion of a $1.2 billion investment in the budget to create a permanent workforce fund to help stabilize the workforce and ensure that child care providers can staff their programs. "The survey data illustrates what child care providers across the state have been telling us for years: without sustained state investment in the child care workforce, they are unable to meet families’ needs,” - Dorothy (Dede) Hill, Director of Policy at Schuyler Center for Analysis and Advocacy From January 27 – February 12, 2025, the Empire State Campaign for Child Care surveyed more than 1,250 child care programs from across New York State on the impact staffing shortages have had on their programs’ ability to serve families in their area. The data is clear: there is a child care workforce shortage in New York State and significant investments are required to fix it. Read more about the survey results here: https://lnkd.in/dUMvWafT Thank you to everyone who joined us for our press conference yesterday! Structural inequities create barriers to achieving good oral health. Racial and ethnic disparities exist in dental disease driven by factors such as poverty, racism, education, access to healthy foods, and more. Expanding access to oral health care can reduce these disparities. Our State of New York’s Children Data Book reveals the challenges child care providers, educators, and staff are facing due to low wages, and provides solutions to bolster availability by providing the workforce with a thriving wage. New York’s children benefit from consistent, high-quality interactions with well-prepared, well-supported educators. Read more here: https://lnkd.in/d3DEP5bi To learn more about expanding access to oral health services in New York State, read our newly released report From Barriers to Bridges: Redesigning New York’s Oral Health Workforce for Equity and Access: https://lnkd.in/gWVyfphm

Allowing children to experience poverty is a policy choice. On a recent episode of the This Robin Hood Moment podcast, our president and CEO Kate Breslin called on state leaders to be intentional in their policies and investments for ending child poverty, something 20% of New York children are experiencing. Our 2025 State of New York’s Children report outlines key data on the wellbeing of New York’s children and families, as well as recommended investments and policy solutions. We invite you to read and learn more about the report and solutions and how we can achieve the goal of reducing child poverty 50% by 2031: https://lnkd.in/d3DEP5bi Listen to the full interview here: https://lnkd.in/eBKAWeYF
