Thank you, ClimateHack and Laura Hodgkiss for highlighting the potential of technology in coral reef restoration and for including me and SeaDeep in this important conversation. 🌊 At SeaDeep, we’re committed to leveraging AI to protect and understand our oceans. Excited to see how tech can drive impactful change for these vital ecosystems! #CoralReefRestoration #OceanConservation #AIforGood”
Can technology restore coral reefs? 🪸 Why we should preserve coral reefs is easier to answer than how we do it. One reason, distinct from the mass of life they support, is that they protect coastlines. Without the wavebreaker effect of reefs the sea would eat away the shore and the communities along it. Fish (and fishing as a livelihood) would collapse without them. Although they cover less than 1% of the oceans, coral reefs support roughly one quarter of ocean life up and down the food chain. Yet their decline in our lifetime is inevitable because of climate change. Already, 50% of reefs have been lost over the past 50 years. That's why entrepreneurs — and lots of scientific researchers — are working to restore coral reefs, carving a new niche for naturetech and the blue economy.
