Our Principal, Justin Williams, M.S. and Managing Director of Unseen Capital, Erica Murdock, were interviewed by the University City Science Center on raising capital and understanding how investors think. "Many entrepreneurs assume that securing investment is simply about presenting a unique or groundbreaking idea. However, Justin Williams, M.S. of Seae Ventures points out that “investors aren’t just looking for a great idea—they’re looking for a great business.” In other words, they want to see a clear path to revenue, a defensible market position, and a leadership team capable of executing the vision. “Founders often focus too much on the pitch and not enough on demonstrating traction, clear financials, and a deep understanding of their customers and market dynamics,” he shares." "The best founders are those who can clearly articulate the problem they're solving, the opportunity in the market, and why their business is the right solution. Erica Murdock of Unseen Capital by Seae Ventures explains, “Investors don’t expect founders to have all the answers, but we do expect them to be able to clearly articulate the problem, the market opportunity, and how and why the company they are building is suited to address that problem.” Erica emphasizes that it’s critical that data and assumptions be accurate and defensible. Investors will appreciate a strong narrative supported by data, whether it’s customer feedback, market trends, or financial forecasts to give them confidence that your business isn’t just a risky bet but a strategic opportunity with real potential for success."

Even if you haven’t consulted the latest data, it’s obvious that our society is grappling with a spiraling behavioral health crisis. Here in the US, more than 20% of adults live with some form of mental illness. While the majority may be classified as low-acuity conditions, the number of high-acuity cases—patients dealing with serious mental illness (SMI)— still accounts for more than 5% of the total population. This number is significant, and it’s projected to only continue growing. Beyond the heavy toll on individual lives, families, and communities, mental illness costs the US economy around $282B annually. That’s roughly the same negative impact we see from a full-blown economic recession. Given that venture capital has become a dominant driver of innovation across the behavioral health sector, it’s a fair question to ask how VC is working to improve this unwelcome reality of modern life. Young people are reporting unprecedented levels of sadness, hopelessness, and suicidal thoughts - all indicators of poor mental health. So how did we get here? The roots of this problem are complex. The pandemic itself, social media, cyberbullying, social isolation, and economic challenges have all played a role.
