While our 2024 Gingerbread Challenge competition is over, the spirit continues through January 4th. You can still visit the Discovery Cube, Southern California’s annual Science of Gingerbread display to see structures built by teams of fellow SEAOSC members as well as members of the community. While visiting Discovery Cube, don’t forget to cast your vote for the People’s Choice Award and help crown this year’s fan-favorite creation. For details, visit https://buff.ly/3ZHjJZl

The 8th Northridge 30th Anniversary Webinar Series on December 18th will be discussing Seismic Risk Communication - Linking Knowledge to Action in Innovative Ways since the '94 Northridge Earthquake. Speakers Ronald Eguchi of ImageCat and Dr. Lucy Jones of the Dr. Lucy Jones Center for Science and Society will present how visual technologies have changed over the past thirty years since the Northridge Earthquake, making recognition of risk easier, faster, and simpler. Together with moderator Louise Comfort of the University of Pittsburgh, they will also explore the design process of generating empathy in a community through music to build the shared social connections essential for collective action under threat. Both approaches offer new promise for creating vital, informed, active communities that are more resilient to seismic risk. Registration is free: https://buff.ly/4iymLHN

Conducting a Whole Building Life Cycle Assessment (WBLCA) is one of the pathways to comply with the new CALGreen Embodied Carbon mandates. A WBLCA measures the greenhouse gas emissions associated with a building from material extraction to end of life and/or beyond the building lifecycle. The building lifecycle has three main stages: the Product and Construction Stage, the In-Use Stage, and the End-of-Life Stage. For the purposes of #CALGreen, the LCA does not have to include operational carbon and only requires the inclusion of specific primary and secondary structural and architectural elements. To learn more about the requirements to comply with the CALGreen WBLCA pathway, check out this webinar, hosted by Structural Engineers Association of California (SEAOC) and AIA California: https://buff.ly/4eYZWda This post is a part of our ongoing #TechnicalTuesdays series, focused on providing industry professionals with easy-to-access information on the new CALGreen embodied carbon requirements. Thank you, Structural Engineers Association of Northern California (SEAONC), for keeping earthquake preparedness and safety at the forefront. Through ZFA’s involvement in the Disaster Emergency Services committee, Kevin Zucco and Tommy Sidebottom, PE are working to educate and encourage structural engineers to become certified Safety Assessment Program (SAP) evaluators. Structural engineers play a vital role in post-disaster recovery, and the SAP certification allows them to directly participate in assessing building safety and expediting community recovery.
𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗲𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝟯𝟱 𝗬𝗲𝗮𝗿𝘀 𝗦𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗟𝗼𝗺𝗮 𝗣𝗿𝗶𝗲𝘁𝗮 𝗘𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗵𝗾𝘂𝗮𝗸𝗲 On Tuesday, October 1, SEAONC’s monthly association meeting commemorated the 35th Anniversary of the Loma Prieta Earthquake, which struck the Bay Area on October 17, 1989. The meeting’s program was thoughtfully planned by the SEAONC Disaster Emergency Services (DES) committee and emceed by DES Chairs, Tommy Sidebottom, PE and Jack Wegleitner. The evening included: • A short interview with SEAONC Past President, Joe Sutton, where he touched on his career and recollections from the day the earthquake struck the Bay Area • An online trivia/quiz created by the Hensolt SEAONC Legacy Committee (HSLC) to test attendees’ knowledge of the earthquake, followed by an enlightening video highlight of news clips from the day of the event (take the quiz yourself here: https://lnkd.in/gfBTWcU7 • An open floor discussion where attendees could share their own personal memories and professional experiences with the earthquake • A panel comprised of David Mar, Kevin Moore, and David Bonowitz, moderated by Stefanie Rae A., reflecting on how engineers responded to the events in the following days, months, and years, as well as where we are (and their thoughts on where we should be) headed in terms of functional recovery and seismic design 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗚𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁 𝗦𝗵𝗮𝗸𝗲𝗢𝘂𝘁 The Great ShakeOut is an annual day of earthquake preparedness. All around the world, companies, schools, and homes participate in earthquake drills on this day to ensure people know the best ways to stay safe in an earthquake. In recognition of this day, we want to share some helpful resources about earthquake preparation and safety. Please see attached poster highlighting some of the best resources we have found. These resources include tips on how to properly prepare for an earthquake, how to remain safe during an earthquake, and what to do after an earthquake.
