With 1,640+ participants, this year’s DoD Energy and Environment Innovation Symposium had a record attendance from our science, technology, and defense communities. Last week was packed with technical sessions, lightning talks, posters, and technology demonstrations that showcased our efforts to drive efficiencies, reduce costs, expand partnerships, and ultimately deliver value to the warfighter. Thank you to everyone who joined us – keep innovating, and we can’t wait to see you next year!

We kicked off the 2024 DoD Energy and Environment Innovation Symposium with a tremendous plenary session that included remarks from Rebecca Isacowitz (DASD ER&O), Sherri Goodman, Dr. Kimberly Yearick Spangler Ph.D, Brig. Gen. Jacob Middleton, and Honorable Brendan Owens (ASD EI&E). They spoke on the importance of defense innovation to support our warfighters in confronting evolving threats and operating in contested environments, from installations to the battlefield. Thank you to our featured project speakers (Dr. Nicholas Judson, Dr. Emily Crownover, and Dr. Lynne Baumgras) for also providing lightning talks on their SERDP and ESTCP-funded work to advance installation energy resilience, PFAS soil remediation, and munitions response technologies at underwater sites.

I had the distinct pleasure of interviewing Sherri Goodman yesterday at the United States Department of Defense Energy and Environment Innovation Symposium. Sherri and I discussed the severe security threats that climate change presents to our military and how innovation is providing real capability to what could have been an intractable challenge. Thanks for joining us, Sherri! SERDP & ESTCP Office of the Under Secretary of Defense for Acquisition & Sustainment

Please join me in DC from December 3-6 for the 2024 DoD Energy and Environment Innovation Symposium! This event, hosted by OSD’s energy and environment innovation programs, brings together more than 1,400 researchers, technology developers, and defense end-users—all working on science and technology solutions to enhance DoD capabilities and protect our nation. We’ll dive into the full range of our programs’ focus areas: operational energy, infrastructure resilience, energy and water security, environmental restoration, resilient chemicals and materials, and more. Plus, every evening features networking receptions with nearly 600 poster presentations and demonstrations of cutting-edge technologies—a showcase of DoD’s leadership in innovation. Our military installations are vital to our ability to project power, and this Symposium highlights how our investments are addressing the threats they face. It’s my favorite conference of the year— I hope to see you there. Learn more and register here: https://lnkd.in/er-nUSA9

The underwater environment poses new challenges for remediating #UXO, with water causing unpredictable effects on explosives and posing more difficulties in locating and classifying munitions than on land. These sessions at the DoD Energy and Environment Innovation Symposium will highlight efforts to develop and transition emerging technologies to detect, classify, and localize UXO in the underwater environment.
