How do you structure a business to succeed? In my experience, there is no one-size fits all company model when it comes to freight brokerages. In growing SiLo, I’ve found that the best model really comes down to the customer base and the type of freight serviced. High volume brokers who are heavy in contract freight with consistencies in both lanes and volume would likely succeed with an Account Executive / Account Manager / Carrier Sales “Chicago” model. On the other hand, if a brokerage is heavy in the spot market where most loads have minimal lead time and are inconsistent in nature, many would argue that the Cradle to Grave model outshines the split model by reducing internal communication gaps through a single point of contact, and maybe most importantly, a single point of accountability. But what if a company has a mix of contract and spot/specialized freight within their customer base? Do you deploy different models by customer or try to make the traditional split model or C2G work for everyone? Curious to hear from the industry on this topic.

As the semester wraps up, we’re reflecting on our time with our interns who joined us this summer! Wesley Yarbrough joined the sales team, before heading into his senior year at Auburn University, where he gained experience on the phones and dove into our sales process here at SiLo. Wes, we appreciate you jumping head first into logistics and for your commitment to the summer kickball league! An internship is a busy role here at SiLo and you went all in! Check out our paid internship opportunity on our website—we’re accepting applications now!
