SilvaCarbon is an interagency technical cooperation program of the United States government to enhance the capacity of tropical-forested countries to monitor, measure, and report carbon in their forests and other lands to strategically reduce tropical forest loss, decision-makers and the public need credible information about where and when forest loss is occurring.
How Does SilvaCarbon Work?
SilvaCarbon draws on the expertise of multiple U.S. government agencies and partners to advance the development and use of better information related to forest and terrestrial carbon. We collaborate with monitoring, reporting, and verification (MRV) from national and subnational offices through workshops, seminars, technical consultations, and training of trainer courses. We offer long-term, step-by-step support that yields accurate and sustainable national forest inventory systems; upgraded, cost-efficient remote sensing tools; and enhanced greenhouse gas reporting capabilities.

This week, the USGS SilvaCarbon program, in collaboration with U.S. academic institutions and key Guatemalan partners such as MARN, CONAP, and INAB, worked on mapping mangroves in Guatemala. We gained valuable insights from local mangrove experts, including that mangroves are not only vital ecosystems but are also vulnerable to fires. These ecosystems play a critical global role in biodiversity conservation, carbon sequestration, and climate resilience, emphasizing the need for their mapping, preservation, and restoration. We are committed to continuing this important work in Guatemala and expanding our efforts to other countries, including Belize, Colombia, and Costa Rica, while fostering South-South collaboration to enhance regional capacity and knowledge sharing. https://lnkd.in/eF4WU_xU
Silvacarbon and SERVIR Global are hosting the first meeting for a coordination group in Latin America. Peru, Guatemala, Ecuador, Belize, Paraguay and Colombia in a dialog with members of academia, USGS, GFOI and USFS to improve forest monitoring in their region. Thanks to SERVIR for hosting. High-resolution satellite data is essential for tasks like validation, calibration, and identifying deforestation hotspots. Planet, Landsat, Sentinel and other freely accessible datasets are crucial in monitoring how we manage and utilize our forest.

I am very excited to share our publication in 𝘙𝘦𝘮𝘰𝘵𝘦 𝘚𝘦𝘯𝘴𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘰𝘧 𝘌𝘯𝘷𝘪𝘳𝘰𝘯𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵, focusing on automated road mapping in tropical forests with satellite imagery and AI. Roads are stretching into tropical forests worldwide, which can lead to deforestation, forest degradation and biodiversity loss. Most road networks in tropical regions remain unmapped, leaving crucial information gaps for forest management and conservation. In this study, we map recent road development in Congo Basin forests in high detail, based on Sentinel-1 and -2 imagery and a deep learning model. The resulting road dataset is openly available. We reveal nearly 50,000 km of roads opened between 2019 and 2023 in the Congo Basin forest, primarily for timber harvesting (selective logging). While these roads affect the forests, selective logging can be a relatively sustainable practice, benefiting regional economies. To balance profitable timber harvests with minimal environmental damage, integrating this automated road mapping system into forest management practices presents an important step forward. Building capacity to combat deforestation. SERVIR SEA , in collaboration with FAO, UNEP, SilvaCarbon, RECOFTC enhanced regional capacity in combating deforestation through a four-day capacity-building workshop in Bangkok. Experts from Cambodia, Vietnam, Lao PDR, Myanmar, Thailand, Philippines, Indonesia, and Nepal improved their skills in forest restoration planning and implementation through case studies, demonstrations, and hands-on training in applying SERVIR SEA’s decision-support tools such as the Regional Land Cover Monitoring System (RLCMS) and Se.Plan. The workshop strengthened SERVIR SEA’s role in providing tailored-made co-developed climate action solutions.
