This week, the USGS SilvaCarbon program, in collaboration with U.S. academic institutions and key Guatemalan partners such as MARN, CONAP, and INAB, worked on mapping mangroves in Guatemala. We gained valuable insights from local mangrove experts, including that mangroves are not only vital ecosystems but are also vulnerable to fires. These ecosystems play a critical global role in biodiversity conservation, carbon sequestration, and climate resilience, emphasizing the need for their mapping, preservation, and restoration. We are committed to continuing this important work in Guatemala and expanding our efforts to other countries, including Belize, Colombia, and Costa Rica, while fostering South-South collaboration to enhance regional capacity and knowledge sharing. https://lnkd.in/eF4WU_xU

At less than 1% of South African land cover, forests represent our smallest and most fragmented biome, yet their significance in fostering biodiversity and human well-being is disproportionate. Afrotemperate forests are our oldest forest ecosystems and vital reservoirs of unique and endemic species. As a signatory of the Convention on Biological Diversity, South Africa is committed to aligning with The Biodiversity Plan - a global action plan to halt biodiversity loss and preserve life on earth. "Be part of the Plan" is the theme for International Day of Biodiversity (IDB) in 2024, reminding us of the urgent need for collective action to halt and reverse biodiversity loss. At CPP, we are proud to be a part of the plan, with our work directly contributing to Goal A, which aims to maintain, enhance, and restore the integrity, connectivity, and resilience of ecosystems; decrease extinction rates; and increase native biodiversity. 🌳🦜 📷: Zander Janzen van Rensburg

🌊We are pleased to announce the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding with IUCN Centre for Mediterranean Cooperation, further strengthening over 15 years of collaboration between the two centers! This partnership has benefited several Mediterranean countries, particularly in the south and east, in developing the marine protected area network, mapping and conserving key marine habitats, protecting and restoring endangered species, and combating bycatch and species introductions. It has also focused on strategic aspects, notably the development of the Post-2020 #SAPBIO and the Regional Strategy for MCPAs and OECMs under the Barcelona Convention. This new MoU aims to continue UNEP/MAP-Barcelona Convention - SPA/RAC - IUCN-Med joint efforts towards achieving biodiversity conservation goals in the Mediterranean. 🌍🌱

The profound connection Caribbean people share with the oceans and our natural surroundings is evident in our unwavering commitment to conservation and sustainable development. Back in 2008, the Caribbean Challenge Initiative (CCI) showcased our nations surpassing the global target, protecting more than 20% of marine areas by 2020. This momentum not only advanced marine management but also gave rise to the Caribbean Biodiversity Fund (CBF), channeling over US$175 million into conservation and sustainable development throughout the Caribbean. As global efforts converge on the goal to protect 30% of all natural areas by 2030, Caribbean leaders were quick to endorse this "30 by 30 goal." This initiative presents a unique opportunity for the region to build on the successes of the CCI and collaboratively pursue new conservation targets. 🌊 Last week, we participated in the CBD 4th #SOI Global Dialogue with Regional Seas Organizations and Regional Fishery Bodies in Seoul, South Korea. This event served as a crucial platform for enhancing regional #cooperation in implementing global ocean frameworks like the Global Biodiversity Framework. We explored cross-sectoral collaboration strategies, emphasizing the partnership between UNEP/MAP – SPA/RAC and the GFCM, and reviewed the progress toward the Mediterranean region's roadmap. Special attention was given to the #BBNJ Agreement. Expanding and deepening regional cooperation is vital for addressing shared challenges in biodiversity conservation and promoting a sustainable blue economy. #GBF #RFB #RSO
