We are excited to announce the distribution of First Vaccinated Day Old Chickens (vDOC) for Mother Units as part of the AIDI-L Poultry Project in the Kongwa, Kondoa, Mpwapwa, and Chamwino Districts. This initiative is designed to empower smallholder farmers by providing rural households with access to dual-purpose improved birds (SASSO), which closely resemble our local chickens and are well-suited for our environment. Through a cost-sharing model for the mother units (brooders), the project aims to facilitate a total of 91,500 Day Old Chicks by its end. Additionally, the project promotes youth engagement by offering agripreneurship opportunities and training for farmers in poultry husbandry and market linkages. Prior to receiving the DOCs, mother units undergo an intensive five-days training program at the Silverlands Training Centre in Makota, covering best practices in poultry farming, including care, feeding, and disease management. This knowledge will equip them to ensure the chickens thrive and produce healthy eggs and meat, addressing the nutritional needs of their families. We are eager to see the positive effects this project will create and anticipate the growth and advancement of these Mother Units. It is a privilege for Silverlands Tanzania to train youth and women as part of the AIDI-L Poultry Project. This initiative plays a vital role in empowering young individuals by providing them with opportunities to engage in the poultry value chain, encompassing all aspects from production to marketing. To date, a total of 100 agents have undergone training, equipping them with essential skills in poultry husbandry, business management, and entrepreneurship. Participants learn best practices for poultry management, including feed management, disease control, and Biosecurity, all of which contribute to enhanced productivity and sustainability. Ultimately, the AIDI-L Poultry Project offers a practical pathway for youth and women to enter the poultry industry, thereby supporting food security and bolstering local economies through SASSO chicken for both meat and eggs. This year, we took it a step further by transforming it into an ongoing initiative, ensuring that Kilimahewa Primary School students in Ifunda receive an egg every day. This campaign, titled "YAI MOJA KWA SIKU," is part of the "An Egg a Day" initiative aimed at: Enhancing children's nutrition with high-quality protein and essential vitamins from eggs. Improving brain health and cognitive functions, which may boost academic performance. Tackling malnutrition and food insecurity by providing at least one nutritious meal daily. Promoting healthy eating habits and informed dietary choices for lifelong benefits. Integrating nutrition education into the curriculum, empowering students to share their knowledge with families and communities.
