There were some inspiring points in Willie Walsh's speech this morning at the 80th International Air Transport Association (IATA) AGM in Dubai. It is clear that aviation plays an essential role for economies and societies around the world, connecting nearly 5 billion people and supporting around $8.3 trillion in trade. It is equally clear that for future generations to continue to benefit from aviation, we have to make it sustainable. Sustainability in aviation is a complex and difficult problem to solve. Whilst we are seeing real efforts by some individual players to decrease emissions and become more sustainable, they are not yet at the scale or speed required to make a real difference to the industry. We need to find a way for the entire ecosystem to work together and align around the greater prize of sustainable aviation.
