SNAPP's expert teams deliver rapid solutions to the most critical challenges facing humans and our planet
About us
SNAPP funds science that rapidly leads to tangible and enduring benefits to conservation and sustainable development. To achieve this, SNAPP funds teams of 12-15 people from diverse organizations to gather for 3-4 collaborative sessions over the course of 12-24 months. Building from a clearly articulated opportunity for cross-sectoral collaboration and innovation to influence policy and/or practice, these working groups conceive new ideas, synthesize data relevant to their work, and deliver rapid solutions. Between sessions, members collaborate remotely; work with long-term implementation partners; identify emerging opportunities for tangible, lasting change; develop and test tools and products; and publish research.

Kick-Starting the SNAPP Working Group on #Resilient Rangelands On November 5-6, 2024, the inaugural meeting of the “Resilient Rangelands: Balancing Rural Economies and Ecosystem Integrity” project took place in Almaty, Kazakhstan. It marked the beginning of a collaborative journey that will continue over the next two years. The project is funded by the Science for Nature and People Partnership (SNAPP), and aims to develop models that will shape the next phase of nature conservation and sustainable development. The working group includes 12 key partners: SDSN Kazakhstan, conservation NGOs, international agencies, herder associations, and university research centers. Together, we will focus on identifying the key features of resilient rangelands that support both livelihoods and biodiversity through sustainable land and water management practices. By employing participatory approaches, our group will develop scenarios for two case-study landscapes: one in western Kazakhstan and another in eastern Mongolia. These scenarios will explore synergies and trade-offs, helping to create spatial plans and management options that can guide future projects and inform national policy frameworks. With active involvement from regional and national stakeholders, the group will ensure the insights gained are practical, relevant, and aligned with the needs of both conservation and agriculture. We are thrilled to announce that the Altyn Dala Conservation Initiative @altyndala has been named the winner of the prestigious Earthshot Prize 2024 in the “Protect and Restore Nature” category, awarded by His Royal Highness Prince William. This incredible recognition highlights our dedication to restoring and preserving Kazakhstan’s unique steppe ecosystems. Beyond Kazakhstan, due to the multiple problems facing temperate grasslands globally, Altyn Dala is collaborating with other major grassland initiatives in the Mongolian steppe, the American prairie, and Patagonian pampas regions. The recognition of the initiative as an Earthshot Prize winner therefore ensures that the learnings and experiences of the Altyn Dala Conservation Initiative benefit nature restoration across the globe. Thanks to the Earthshot Prize, we will be able to expand our impact even further, bringing more life and resilience to the Kazakh steppe. There is still a lot to do, but we are celebrating this important milestone! A huge thank you to the staff and teams working hard throughout our partnership and beyond to bring us to this moment ACBK — Association for the Conservation of Biodiversity of Kazakhstan Fauna & Flora Frankfurt Zoological Society / Zoologische Gesellschaft Frankfurt and RSPB Please visit our partners FZS's website for our press release and more information on the prize. https://lnkd.in/e5dd93_p

From November 4 to 6, Almaty hosted the first meeting of the working group for the SNAPP Resilient Rangelands: Balancing Rural Economies and Ecosystem Integrity project, funded by the Science for Nature and People Partnership (SNAPP) initiative. The event brought together conservationists, economists, and agricultural experts to discuss sustainable rangeland management. The working group consists of representatives from 16 organizations. The primary goal is to develop practical solutions for sustainable rangeland management that benefit both ecosystems and agriculture. The group will convene four times in different locations to review interim results and formulate recommendations. During the meeting, the interdisciplinary team, supported by researchers from Oxford, was introduced to the Foresight Framework method for analyzing variables affecting rangeland sustainability. The project focuses on sharing best practices between Kazakhstan and Mongolia, which share similar rangeland landscapes and livestock systems. Alyona Koshkina, a researcher at the Association for the Conservation of Biodiversity of Kazakhstan (ACBK), noted: “Despite differences in landscapes, the project areas have much in common, enabling the development of universal solutions for both countries.” At the first meeting, working group members presented their strategies and experiences in rangeland management. The next meeting is scheduled to take place in Mongolia in 2025. The Science for Nature and People Partnership (SNAPP) brings together experts to develop scalable solutions at the intersection of conservation and sustainable development. Project groups receive funding and analytical support to create practical recommendations and decision-making tools.
