We’re excited to announce our latest publication: "From the depths to the apex: Tracing the organophosphate ester journey through marine food webs". 🔍 This study dives deep into the world of organophosphate esters (OPEs), analyzing their behavior across various marine species and trophic levels. Through this research, we've uncovered insights into bioaccumulation, biomagnification, and how these contaminants are metabolized within marine ecosystems. 🌍 These findings bring us closer to understanding the impact of contaminants on marine biodiversity and ecosystem health, highlighting potential risks for marine life—and for us. Check out the full article for a closer look at our findings! 👇 w/ Odei Garcia Garin & Ethel Eljarrat Esebag

Today I attended Day 1 of the Mizzou College of Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources - CAFNR Research Symposium (Day 1). Today’s focus was a celebration of the discovery of Aureomycin and discussion of the critical role of soil health in our ecosystems. On the face of it, this might seem not really related to the work I do, but I found every talk informative and inspiring. I often find that stepping outside my focus area to learn something in a different field provides valuable insights and a new perspective. The discovery of Aureomycin, made by Dr. Benjamin Minge Duggar in 1945, continues to impact human and animal health through antibiotics like tetracycline, which, as Dr. Taylor Nelson highlighted, is now even used in cancer prevention by treating H. Pylori infections. Hearing from Tobey Hackett, the first person cured by Aureomycin in 1949, was a powerful reminder of how scientific breakthroughs can transform lives. However, as Dr. John Middleton pointed out, the widespread use of antibiotics is not without challenges—there’s still work to be done, especially around the consequences of overuse. Dr. Samiran Banerjee emphasized that soil is the most diverse ecosystem, with 1.5 kg of life per square meter. And Dr. Chung Ho Lin reminded us, “Without diversity, we’re unable to adapt,” emphasizing that healthy soils offer rich opportunities for bio-inspired discovery. As Sara Pauley explained through the One Health model, the health of humans, animals, and the environment are interlinked, and it’s our shared responsibility to maintain and improve these ecosystems. Her insights into equitable access to nature—through initiatives like the Boone County Nature School—highlight the importance of including all voices in conservation efforts. For me, today’s conversations at the symposium emphasized that creating inclusive systems where diverse contributions are valued is key to building healthier, more adaptable ecosystems. Looking forward to Day 2! #STEM #Innovation #SoilHealth #OneHealth #InclusiveInnovation #Aureomycin

🌊 The recording of our last scientific webinar on #Biosecurity in the seaweed industry with Pr. Elizabeth Cottier-Cook (Scottish Association For Marine Science/GlobalSeaweed-SUPERSTAR) is now available on our Youtube Channel, check it out! ➡️https://lnkd.in/e3SwB-uh Abstract: "The rapid expansion and intensification of the seaweed industry are unlikely to abate soon, as the world increasingly looks toward the oceans to provide new sources of nutrition and nature-based solutions to climate change. This rapid expansion, however, combined with rising seawater temperatures and coastal eutrophication, has led to an increase in infectious disease and pest outbreaks. The timing seems right, therefore, to introduce a new Progressive Management Pathway (PMP) to Improve Seaweed Biosecurity. This PMP will form an integral component of a whole supply-chain approach for de-risking aquaculture supply chains. We believe it will also profoundly change the structure of this industry, ultimately allowing countries access to markets worldwide and promoting the implementation of the ‘One Health’ approach to ensure environmental, social and crop health. This webinar by Prof Elizabeth Cottier-Cook will explain how the PMP/AB-Seaweed could assist your country in safeguarding the future of its seaweed industry and provide case studies for how this PMP can be applied at farm level." Our newest project is good news for BC’s shellfish industry 🦪 and fans of beach time!🏖️ Fecal pollution in BC's marine waters can lead to prolonged shellfish harvesting closures and recreational beach shutdowns. The University of British Columbia and BC Centre for Disease Control-led project, funded by Genome BC, is developing a new two-step microbial source tracking test using genomics. This test will distinguish between human and animal waste contamination, empowering communities to quickly identify the source and take targeted action to clean it up. The BC Shellfish Growers Association and the Malahat Nation are also partners on the project. Objectives: • Develop a rapid and accurate test to pinpoint the source of fecal pollution (human or animal). • Create educational materials for industry and Indigenous communities. Benefits: • Improved public health protection through faster identification of contamination sources. • Reduced economic losses for the shellfish industry by minimizing harvesting closures. • Local communities empowered to take control and implement better management practices. Mortiño berries (Vaccinium meridionale) are a critical component of the IUCN Red Listed, Critically Endangered Antioquia Brushfinch's diet (photographed). Unfortunately, mortiño shrubs are being increasingly cleared for cattle ranching in the region. However, because they are also suitable for human consumption as well, growing these berries can provide an economic opportunity for local farmers while also helping to preserve their existence in the birds’ habitat. Training in propagation and production of mortiño berries is one of many learnings of the Antioquia Biomonitores Program, the upfront benefit-sharing initiative of our pilot series of Conservation Challenges in Colombia. Learn more about our work to help protect the Antioquia Brushfinch and Antipitta (whose taxonomies are still under study) in collaboration with Instituto de Investigación de Recursos Biológicos Alexander von Humboldt and #Colombia-based NGO Neotropical Innovation on our platform. platform.wiseancestors.org Please note: The two reference genomes generated in this pilot series will contribute to Earth BioGenome Project!
