Honestly this article was a thought-provoker. Writer and director Kabir Chibber shared his opinion on the New York Times' Screenland on Hollywood's "Diversity Era" (yes, the quotes are on purpose) Chibber argues that the recent push for diversity and inclusion in Hollywood has been frankly weak and performative. Too many films (think the 2016 Ghostbusters reboot) was just an attempt to check off boxes than anything really meaningful or compelling. Another example is Captain Marvel, positioned to be one of the most powerful heroes in the MCU, only to play a minor role in the overarching story. So much for that, huh? The problem with Hollywood is that they think they can keep repeating the same old stories just with new faces. But honestly? That doesn't amount to much aside from just reboots (yawn) and nothing substantially changed for a character's story. In the end, it's just another cashgrab because it's a 1 for 1 reshoot, just in live action (looking at you, Disney!) It isn't entirely bleak though - some films were genuine and this era DID open doors for underrepresented voices. "Get Out" and "Everything Everywhere All at Once" are prime examples of meaningful and innovative storytelling that goes beyond the tokenism Hollywood thinks they can get away with. And streaming shows are going great too! Look at Interior Chinatown and Red White and Royal Blue! As Chibber puts it: "projects that almost surely would not have happened a generation ago." The future of Hollywood and diversity will be striking a balance between inclusivity and good storytelling. Hope they get the memo. It's the most wonderful time of the year! For Hallmark Media fans, at least. Hey, we won't judge! Who doesn't like a feel-good movie to wrap up the year? Well, weirdly... some people don't. At least, they don't like the diversity that Hallmark is trying (and honestly still failing) to push forward. It's probably good to know that from 2017 to 2023, about 8% of Hallmark movies featured nonwhite stars on their posters. But that pales in comparison to Lifetime Television's 44%. But hey, they're still making stories introducing LGBTQ couples, interracial relationships and stories centered on underrepresented communities! At least... we'll find out soon if that trend continues this year. Chock credits the shift to “a desire to appeal to a younger demographic that is not only more accepting, but actually has greater expectations” when it comes to representation, and Hallmark still aims to produce content that "reflects a wide variety of cultural backgrounds, perspectives and lifestyles in the form of storytelling." So that's good news, right?! Only time will tell if Hallmark can truly embrace diversity and create a truly inclusive holiday season for all. #snarkyelephant #film #hallmark #hallmarkmovies #holidays #christmas #inclusion #diversity

Just as it's important to see representation on the silver screen, it's equally as important to see diversity in advertisements! I mean, not everyone has the most dramatic life. Most of us are just regular ol' people living their day to day lives - exactly what adverts are geared towards. I mean remember the backlash when a cereal brand showed an interracial couple? People still get heated over that, apparently. So it's nice that they're recognizing the people (or companies, I guess) who are doing it right. It’s inspiring to see the growing recognition of diversity and inclusion in advertising. The AdColor Awards celebrate those who are breaking down barriers and showcasing authentic representation. Cheers to more diversity across the board! #snarkyelephant #adcolorawards #diversity #tv

Good news for diversity on television! Despite production cuts over the course of this year, women and people of color are still getting more directing opportunities in episodic TV, according to the Directors Guild of America. Obviously, there's still lots of work to be done. The DGA themselves note that diversifying the entire directorial team is still a challenge. DGA President Lesli Linka Glatter states: “Although these gains have held steady through the beginning of 2024, we must remain vigilant in this time when employers have pulled back on production. Our Diversity and Inclusion data is critical for putting pressure on the industry to do a better job in advancing opportunities for directors from historically marginalized communities.” And remember! It's not on them to be arbiters of change - we must do our part too! Check out our website to get started! https://lnkd.in/e4VixwQE #snarkyelephant #directorsguildofamerica #dga #diversity #tv

Hollywood's latest stunt: cutting jobs and diversity initiatives. Guess we should've seen this one coming. As audiences shift from traditional TV and theaters to streaming services, job cuts have hammered the industry, according to the Bloomberg. Projects are now harder to finance in our brave new world of higher interest rates, shorter attention spans, and algorithm-driven entertainment. Charles D. King states: “Many of us people from diverse communities who were the last ones hired, a lot of them were the first ones losing positions." And that sucks, obviously! And combined with the UCLA Hollywood Diversity Report that found that diverse films perform better at the box office and with audiences... Hollywood, what are you doing? No time to sit and gawk though. While Hollywood decides to sit on their hands, we've got work to do! #snarkyelephant #diversity #bloomburg #dei
