As devastating wildfires continue to impact Los Angeles, claiming lives and displacing communities, we extend our deepest sympathies to all those affected. It’s a stark reminder that wildfires don’t recognize borders — and underscore the reality that urban spaces are not immune to wildfire impacts. We are deeply concerned about this issue in the South, where we have three of the top four states in the nation with the most Wildland Urban Interface (where homes near nature are more at-risk to wildfire). This increases the need for community-wide awareness and action. Learn more about what communities can do to reduce wildfire risk at https://lnkd.in/eVCrDAsn.

We are deeply saddened by the passing of Jan Davis, a cherished friend and colleague who worked closely with our membership throughout her remarkable career. Jan’s leadership and vision shaped many of the forestry programs and partnerships we value today, leaving an enduring legacy. She was an inspiring leader and a dear friend who will be profoundly missed. To honor her memory, the U.S. Forest Service has created a Condolences Board (https://bit.ly/3Px3nxr) where you can share messages, memories and stories. This tribute will be delivered to her family on Tuesday, January 14th, as a celebration of her life and the many ways she touched our community. Our thoughts are with her family and loved ones during this difficult time.

#ICYMI Important support is on the way for disaster recovery. The recently passed temporary federal funding measure (Continuing Resolution) includes critical relief for private forest landowners—who manage 86% of southern forests—recovering from hurricanes and other natural disasters. This funding was made possible through relentless advocacy by the Southern Group of State Foresters, the National Association of State Foresters and other partners, working to secure the resources landowners need to restore their forests and livelihoods. As Native American Heritage Month comes to a close, we want to celebrate the incredible role Tribal Nations continue to play in caring for our forests. In fact, many of the prescribed fire practices we use today are inspired by traditional knowledge passed down through generations. These methods help keep forests healthy, protect wildlife and reduce the risk of dangerous wildfires. 🌲🔥 We’re grateful for the wisdom and collaboration of Tribal communities in keeping southern forests strong and sustainable. #NativeAmericanHeritageMonth #PrescribedFire #GoodFire #SouthernForests
