  • Thank you to RAL Space for kindly hosting the October Space Partnership Board meeting and showing us around their facilities working at the cutting edge of space technology. The Board discussed how, now that we have a full set of Capability Roadmaps, it is important that they can evolve as decisions are made and time progresses (do get in touch if you would like to see the roadmaps). We also continued to discuss priorities for the UK’s long-term relationship with ESA ahead of CMin25 as well as the recently published Industrial Strategy green paper. The Space Partnership is working to draw your knowledge and expertise from across the sector to inform various discussions at the Board that help to agree shared priorities and collective action for achieving the ambition in the National Space Strategy. We are keen to hear from as many people as possible so do reach out if you have any thoughts to share.

Looking forward to Day 2 at Defence Space. My reflections on yesterday’s sessions: - Clear call to action from Armed Forces Minister, Luke Pollard: don’t just talk about what needs to be done, figure out how collectively we can deliver it in practice. - UK government discussed how they are actively working together, acknowledging different objectives and agreeing how they can speak with one voice. [My day-to-day experience in the Space Partnership (DSIT, DBT, MOD, UKSA sit on the Board) is that there is a lot of willingness and effort going into this, but that it takes time to work through differing objectives to agree the best way forward for government as a whole, not just an individual department.] - Industry (perhaps unsurprisingly) focussed on the challenges the sector faces, although noted the strong desire to collaborate to address them. Air Marshal (Ret’d) Sir Stuart Atha made it clear that industry is an essential part of delivering effective defence. The panel explained that to achieve this there needs to be a way that government, industry and academia can have open discussions and build trust. [This is exactly what the Space Partnership is all about, although it is clear that I need to do more to build up the level of trust and support beyond the Space Partnership Board.] - The defence panels and keynotes demonstrated that space is now better understood across defence, leading to clearer requirements being articulated across the different domains. The funding (not to mention procurement) challenges were acknowledged and with the Strategic Defence Review and Spending Review to come, there was clearly no answer on the balance of Own-Access-Collaborate let alone the type and level of future contracts. I hope today picks up these themes and starts to clarify the ‘how’ we are going to work together when we leave the conference to address the challenges and open up the significant opportunities that lie ahead for the space sector. I believe the Space Partnership can help move the ‘how’ conversation forward and would love to hear your thoughts, so do catch me today. PS Thanks to US Space Force for the great ‘day in the life of a satellite operator’, it reminded us that people need to be at the heart of everything we do.

  • Do get in touch if you have thoughts on the satellite manufacturing supply chain in the UK

What are your thoughts on the satellite manufacturing supply chain in the UK? This was the topic of the lively panel discussion I moderated at Space-Comm Expo Scotland. Tom Walkinshaw was frank about the challenges of starting up a company and Prof. Dr. Lesley Jane S highlighted the R&D strengths in UK universities (albeit they are facing funding challenges). Daniel Bindel explained how UK companies contribute to international supply chains that address a range of customer demand, which Andrew Strain noted is increasingly for provision of a service rather than the technology itself. Joshua Broom pointed out that there are lots of views on the UK supply chain, but no single source of truth. The Space Partnership is trying to deliver just that. First we commissioned an infographic and now we are contacting all the companies listed to understand more. If you: feature on the supply chain and haven’t spoken to us yet; think your company should be on the infographic; or have thoughts on the UK supply chain for satellite manufacturing, do please get in touch (especially if you are going to be at #DefenceSpace24 this week).  The panel sparked a lively discussion and there were some great audience questions, so I have no doubt there will be plenty of views! I look forward to hearing them. Infographic: https://lnkd.in/ew5XVq5K
