SPE Major Awards Information and Award Committee Call for Volunteers Dear GTTS Members, The SPE regional and international awards programs need your help. Each of the international awards has a dedicated judging committee, with members serving three-year terms. Typically, the most active, engaged and knowledgeable member is invited to chair the committee in their third year, and upon completion, they join the parent Awards and Recognition Committee for one year. Each year, about a third of each committee’s members rotate off, creating vacancies that need filling. CALL FOR VOLUNTEERS – CURRENTLY ACCEPTING APPLICATIONS Each year, volunteer opportunities for awards committees are posted on the Volunteer page at SPE.org. Here, members can apply to join an awards committee and sign up for notifications on future volunteer roles. To fill the committee spots as members complete their terms, section members—and any SPE members—are encouraged to explore the requirements and apply to committees for which they are interested in joining. Especially, assistance is needed on the 10 technical awards committees; therefore members are urged to apply to any technical discipline aligning with their expertise. Links to each of our four committee categories can be found below and should be used for any interested SPE members wishing to apply: 🔔 Major Awards Subcommittees: 2026 Awards Major Award Subcommittees - SPE Connect 🔔 Service and Faculty Award Subcommittees: 2026 Awards Service and Faculty Award Subcommittees - SPE Connect 🔔 Technical Awards Subcommittees: 2026 Awards Technical Award Subcommittees - SPE Connect 🔔 Cedric K. Oil and Gas
Promoting knowledge transfer between the petroleum and geothermal industries. #WeAreSPE
About us
The Geothermal Technical Section is for members with a common interest in geothermal energy and its potential to transform generation of electric power and direct heating and cooling across the globe. Geothermal energy is the only “green” energy source that has the potential to provide grid baseload power at scale. It is in many ways, the closest energy source in terms of required skills to the upstream oil and gas industry. Geothermal and the oil and gas industry have been learning from each other for decades and are currently well placed to transfer technology and practices that can accelerate the drilling and completion of geothermal wells, reduce costs and revolutionize reservoir monitoring practices. The Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) is a not-for-profit professional association whose more than 140,600 members in 144 countries are engaged in oil and gas exploration and production. SPE is a key resource for technical knowledge providing opportunities to exchange information at in-person and online events and training courses, publications, and other resources at www.spe.org.

Reminder: Kenya's geothermal sector accounts for an incredible 47% of the nation's power generation! This large slice of the pie is set to grow in 2025 thanks to several key initiatives and developments in the pipeline which will edge capacity closer to the exclusive 1 GW milestone. ✅ Completion of Geothermal Development Company's Menengai II Geothermal Power Station (35 MW): Scheduled for commissioning in 2025. This is part of GDC's 5-Year strategic plan focusing on steam development, power plant construction and funding mobilization. ☑️ KenGen Kenya, Kenya's state-owned electricity generating company, is progressing with the development of the Olkaria VII Geothermal Power Station. While the exact commissioning date is yet to be confirmed, the plant is anticipated to add between 83 MW and 140 MW to the national grid. ✅ The Kenyan government is actively encouraging private sector participation in geothermal energy projects. Initiatives such as public-private partnerships and favorable investment policies are expected to attract more private investors, leading to the development of additional geothermal power stations and infrastructure. ☑️ Regional Geothermal Expansion: Kenya is extending its expertise to neighboring countries, assisting in the development of geothermal energy projects across East Africa. This regional collaboration not only strengthens Kenya's position as a geothermal leader but also opens up new markets and opportunities for Kenyan companies in the renewable energy sector. I will be meeting with key stakeholders of Kenya's geothermal sector this week and next. The aim is to share insights from Scientific Drilling & SDI Cased Hole Services' decades of geothermal experience in production monitoring, well integrity evaluation and drilling operations from around the world. I will also be wearing my SPE Geothermal Technical Section - GTTS hat to engage with the local geothermal community and hopefully form long-lasting ties.
