About us
Spurlock Landscape Architects creates transformative, restorative urban and natural landscapes that connect people, communities, and environments. Combining deep understanding of regional ecologies with critical analysis, research, and inventive design, they look for elegant solutions to create projects with an authentic sense of place. Andy Spurlock established the firm in 1988, to provide an innovative, site-conditioned approach to both planning and landscape architectural design. Over the past 3 decades, Spurlock Landscape Architects has expanded to over 20 people including a leadership team of 4 Principals/Owners, based in San Diego, California. As the firm has grown in size, the result has been a lively collective collaboration on a broad range of projects that have earned national, state and local awards from the American Society of Landscape Architects, the American Institute of Architects and the American Planning Association. Spurlock is a California certified Small Business Enterprise (SBE), Small Local Business Enterprise (SLBE), and certified Woman-Owned Small Business (WOSB).

Construction has started on the new native plant garden and trail at the San Diego Natural History Museum. What a great way to celebrate the museum's 150th anniversary!
This morning, we kicked off our anniversary year with the official groundbreaking of a new, native plant garden—Nature Trail at The Nat. The 22,000-square-foot outdoor exhibit, scheduled to open late spring, will introduce visitors to the beautiful and beneficial native plants that support the incredible diversity of life in our region. Park supporters and guests were on hand as elected officials and Museum and Park leaders “turned dirt” to signify the start of the project. This garden is a cornerstone of our sesquicentennial—150 years of studying, protecting, and bringing people closer to nature. We can’t wait for you to experience it! We're honored to be selected and thrilled to continue our partnership with Forever Balboa Park.
Balboa Park’s Botanical Building and Gardens is entering the second phase of its historic restoration project. After receiving several proposals from award-winning firms from across the country, Forever Balboa Park is excited to announce that Spurlock Landscape Architects has been selected as the consultant team for Phase 2, and the design work begins this month. Phase 2, led by Forever Balboa Park, will restore, reconstruct, and revitalize the Botanical Building exterior gardens. Read more in our press announcement at 4-bp.org/phase2spurlock. The vision for the restored exterior gardens is to create a community space where visitors can connect and learn about nature. The revitalized exterior gardens will extend and complement the Botanical Building’s interior horticultural experience to inspire new generations of plant enthusiasts and nature lovers.
