STAR IDAZ International Research Consortium on Animal Health

The #SCAR Animal Health and Welfare CWG held its annual plenary meeting from 9-10th December 2024 in Rome, with the possibility of online participation for members unable to attend in person. The aim of the meeting was to consolidate the European network with authorities, policy makers, funders, experts and private partners with a strong interest in animal health and animal welfare in the EU and beyond. The first day was dedicated to the meetings of the two subgroups of the CWG (Animal Welfare subgroup and Strategy & Foresight Unit), which ended with a joint sequence for the first time to optimise discussion within the CWG. Recent reports of Foot-and-Mouth Disease (FMD) outbreaks in Germany highlight the persistent threat transboundary animal diseases pose to livestock industries, food security, and global trade. These outbreaks not only cause significant economic losses but also emphasize the urgent need for advanced research and innovation to tackle such challenges. 🌍 To address these issues, STAR-IDAZ has developed comprehensive research roadmaps for FMD, focusing on: Vaccines: Advancing next-generation vaccine development Diagnostics: Innovating rapid and reliable detection tools Control Tools: Strengthening strategies for disease prevention and containment. January is One Health awareness month! At STAR IDAZ IRC, our One Health Working Group has been busy working on how to improve and better utilise existing funding mechanisms for research that embeds a One Health approach. The One Health Working Group members include expertise across human health, animal health, plant health, health of the environment and social sciences.   Since 2022, the group has conducted a survey and held two meetings, producing a Mapping One Health report, which was published in summer 2024: https://lnkd.in/ezxyJTCJ. The report explores the current One Health research funding landscape, its challenges, and makes draft recommendations for funders to better align their funding strategies with the priorities and requirements of the One Health research community. In March 2025, STAR IDAZ IRC is planning to hold an in-person One Health funding workshop in Nairobi, Kenya, bringing together a group of One Health researchers and One Health funders, programme owners, resource partners and others with an interest in potentially funding One Health. This will enable different stakeholders to discuss and refine the draft recommendations from the above report, co-developing feasible and practical suggestions to improve funding mechanisms for One Health.  At STAR IDAZ we recognise the need to use a One Health approach to tackle outbreaks, such as HPAI in dairy cattle, and FMD, which has been reported recently in Germany. The International Veterinary Vaccinology Network (IVVN) has announced funding for an IVVN Early Career Researcher training fellow. This fellowship scheme aims to support the professional development of those working in veterinary vaccinology research and innovation over an 18-month period. The IVVN ECR training fellowship will run in conjunction with a separate One Health mentoring scheme for ECRs working on veterinary infectious diseases funded through the RCVS Knowledge 2024 Plowright Prize. The scheme will support: Professional Development: The scheme does not duplicate basic training but instead focuses on building advanced scientific, project management and leadership skills that fellows can apply in their research setting. Mentorship: including senior researcher mentorship, group networking and peer-to-peer learning within veterinary vaccinology and One Health research. Multidisciplinary Approach: All activities seek to complement and strengthen linkages across research on veterinary vaccinology and One Health.
