In an effort to positively impact the lives of people less fortunate than ourselves, our ‘Angels of Change’ have been helping those in need and providing support and kindness through several charitable initiatives. At our Luxembourg office, just before Christmas, we filled a car with toys, scooters, winter clothes and children’s books donated by staff, which were taken to Stëmm vun der Strooss, a local non-profit organisation that encourages the social and professional integration of underprivileged and vulnerable individuals.   In Italy, our team collaborated with Caritas, a charity where homeless people are offered hot meals and shelter until they find a job and reintegrate into society. Laura Farina, who volunteers at the charity, made a list of items that would be useful to people and avoid any waste. Day after day in the weeks before Christmas, staff made donations which were then delivered to Caritas on 20 December. Everyone within the centre was presented with new socks, t-shirts, underwear, belts, woollen hats, toothpaste, toothbrush and deodorant.   Inspired by their colleagues in Luxembourg and Italy, the UK office is now collecting warm clothes and donations for Julian House, a shelter in Bath supporting homeless and at-risk people.   The ‘Angels of Change’ is part of our ongoing ‘Agents of Change’ programme that staff are engaged with throughout the year. #AngelsOfChange #AgentsOfChange

  • What do cars, planes, luxury yachts, satellites and naval ships have in common? The answer is that model-based system engineering (MBSE) has transformed their design, manufacture and maintenance, because it provides significant benefits for complex systems across all these aspects. In this latest blog post by Paloma Maestro Redondo, Starion System Engineer and Project Manager, she explains how #MBSE's principles can be applied to any engineering discipline, with examples from industries that are already using it successfully. Paloma also explains how, when implemented for specific projects or teams, and at a larger scale – such as for a complete mission design or at company level – MBSE can improve efficiency, traceability and collaboration. AI & ML / EO and Downstream Competence Area Leader at Starion and Nexova

I was honoured to represent Starion Group at the ESA-Eurospace “ESA Earth Observation Programmes for CM25” Seminar this week, participating in the session titled “From Data to Decision-Making: Turning EO Data into Actionable Products and Solutions”. As the Competence Area Lead for Artificial Intelligence / Machine Learning and Downstream Applications at Starion, my intervention focused on one of the most pressing challenges in the downstream Earth observation sector: bridging the gap between scientific objectives and commercial needs. I highlighted the critical need for faster access to space to accelerate innovation and ensure EO data translates into tangible societal and economic benefits. By integrating cutting-edge solutions and fostering collaboration, I emphasised how we can create a more seamless pathway from data acquisition to decision-making. A perfect example of this interdisciplinary approach followed by Starion is our SmartDIG project, supported by ESA through the InCubed initiative, which combines AI, EO and cultural heritage expertise to preserve archaeological sites and ensure sustainable management of these invaluable resources. This project showcases how EO data, when paired with the right technological and domain expertise, can deliver transformative results across diverse sectors. My intervention also touched on the role of European Space Agency - ESA in fostering this ecosystem by supporting research-to-business initiatives and enabling new models of collaboration, such as Data as a Service and Satellite as a Service, to unlock the potential of EO in the broader data economy. During the session, moderated by Emmanuel PAJOT (Secretary General, EARSC) with the support of Charles Galland (Policy Manager, EARSC), I had the opportunity to discuss alongside an exceptional panel of experts: Ciro Daragiati Farinelli from Airbus Defence and Space; Pia Feurstein, from OroraTech; Christos Kontopoulos from GEOSYSTEMS HELLAS S.A.; Monika Krzyżanowska from CloudFerro S.A.; Antoine Masse from IGN FI; and Giovanni Sylos Labini of Planetek Italia (also EARSC Vice-Chairman). Key questions we tackled included: ✅ How can we ensure EO data is accessible and actionable for all stakeholders? ✅ How to increase the availability of VHR data and timeliness to make it ready for the end-users? ✅ What strategies can enhance user understanding and skills in leveraging EO data? ✅ How do we balance scientific missions with commercial applications to maximise the impact of EO? I’m grateful for the opportunity to contribute to these crucial discussions and share Starion's commitment to providing engineering expertise for space and critical infrastructures across Europe, always pushing the boundaries of innovation. Thanx to ESA/ESTEC and ASD-Eurospace for organising this even. #EarthObservation #ESA #EARSC #ArtificialIntelligence #StarionGroup #Innovation #Sustainability #AI #SpaceEngineering #DownstreamApplications
