About us
50 Years of Service In 1973, a group of parents who had children with disabilities envisioned a place where their loved ones could find purpose, friendship, and community. These parents, mostly mothers, came together to form Las Madrinas, an auxiliary group that raised funds for the Scottsdale Foundation for the Handicapped (SFH) in Scottsdale, AZ. The organization's early days saw them operating out of borrowed space, making quilts, and utilizing Mary King's sewing machine. But STARS mission and services have evolved significantly over the years. Today, STARS offers a full range of programming, including training and support designed to help participants achieve full-time, inclusive employment and day training programs to help make each day have purpose. The organization has grown to operate out of two locations in Scottsdale, and its services now extend valley-wide.

STARS AZ teamed up with Tanner Natzke of the Phoenix Suns to host our participants at last Thursday's Suns vs. Hawks Basketball game. The event was led by Claudia Chavez and coordinated by Baylee Lane; the two collaborated with Tanner to make the night a success! STARS AZ is so grateful for this experience and excited about future opportunities to work together! Go Suns! 🏀

On Saturday, November 2, a small - but intrepid - group of volunteers from the STARS family helped to beautify the Cholla campus by planting a variety of desert-appropriate fauna in many of the concrete planters located around the facility. Where we did not replace plants, we cleaned up and brought fresh soil and water to ensure a long life for all of them! Special thanks to @Alex Duarte, head of the Day Training for Adults program, Baylee Lane, Joe Bonanno, Austin Lane, and especially our parents and guardians Eddie Trayler and Carole Powers Lauck and participant Sean Lauck.
