For every mile of driving avoided by improving transit service, another 6-9 miles are reduced by the resulting changes in development patterns and travel among drivers. https://lnkd.in/duEChMUc

SSTI supports state transportation agencies committed to sustainability, equity, and transparent governance.
About us
The State Smart Transportation Initiative promotes transportation practices that advance environmental sustainability and equitable economic development, while maintaining high standards of governmental efficiency and transparency. As a joint project of the University of Wisconsin and Smart Growth America, we operate mainly in three ways: 1. We operate a peer network for leaders of state departments of transportation who meet regularly at our Community of Practice meetings. 2. We lead research and technical assistance that informs transformative and replicable transportation reform efforts across the U.S. 3. We share knowledge and best practices with the wider transportation community, including federal, state, and local agencies, community groups, and policy organizations.

A "co-design" process that includes road users can lead to better safety interventions than those made by professional engineers alone, according to a new study. That process can also build trust among stakeholders, from transportation officials to activists. https://lnkd.in/dpZneTBr

Changes to California's environmental rules have inspired a shift away from "level of service," or LOS. But replacing it with a single measure like VMT is more complicated than it can seem.

I like this analogy: measuring #LevelOfService is like taking someone's temperature--it can be only one of many data points in a diagnosis. "An engineer might also want to evaluate #multimodal #accessibility and balance the needs of non-drivers. More importantly, they may need to address #congestion through strategies for [#DemandManagement], rather than by increasing the capacity of the road."
