An urban pioneer responding to the unmet and emerging needs of the homeless and at-risk of Dallas for more than 40 years

About us

Since 1975, The Stewpot, a community ministry of First Presbyterian Church of Dallas, has offered a safe haven for homeless and at-risk individuals of Dallas, providing resources for basic survival needs as well as opportunities to start a new life. Over the years, it has evolved from a soup kitchen into a social services hub that serves the needs of the unhoused, helps unhoused individuals become housed, and provides resources to individuals and families at risk for homelessness. The Stewpot serves approximately 12,000 extremely-low-to-moderate income individuals and families every year through five program areas: Stabilization, Housing, Nutritional Support, Education, and Enrichment.

  • A New Way Home indeed! Journalists Christopher Connelly and Yfat Yssifor from KERA North Texas heard about Dallas’ new coordinated strategy focused on moving people from homeless encampments into long-term housing and decided to tag along to report on the process. You might just see some familiar Stewpot staff faces in the first installment of the 4-part series released on October 2nd. See the video and read the article at https://lnkd.in/gV24K4Nm. This video series documents the Dallas homeless encampment closure process, the trust built between neighbors and city partners, and neighbors moving into new homes with plans for continued support.

Today, the All Neighbors Coalition, led by Housing Forward, announced the successful completion of the first phase of the Street to Home initiative, which launched with an operation to rehouse over 100 individuals experiencing chronic homelessness in downtown Dallas in less than 100 days. This milestone represents a significant step toward achieving the Coalition’s goal to cut street homelessness in half by 2026 as compared to 2021 levels. The Street to Home initiative, a collaboration among public and private partners, focuses on rehousing those experiencing homelessness in highly visible public spaces. The first phase targeted three downtown zones, and was led by Housing Forward, the City of Dallas, and Downtown Dallas, Inc. (DDI). “This new way of doing business demonstrates that we can both address community concerns about public spaces and compassionately end an individual’s homelessness.” said Sarah Kahn, President & CEO of Housing Forward. “This initiative is another milestone in our efforts to reduce street homelessness in Dallas and Collin counties by 50% by 2026.” Read the press release here: https://lnkd.in/gEN6EVvC

  • Why do we do what we do at The Stewpot? Because every person matters—the ones without homes, those living in poverty, and those on street corners. Since 1975, we’ve been #ServingSecondChances, adapting to meet the needs of our Dallas neighbors. What began as a soup kitchen in the basement of First Presbyterian Church has evolved into a comprehensive hub of support services for those in need. This has been an energy-filled #NorthTexasGivingDay and we truly appreciate your support! If you'd like to support our mission, there's still time: https://lnkd.in/gRBiY4Bh.
