Practical x265 Encoding Tests – Single-Pass vs. Two-Pass Two-pass encoding is often the "go-to" for bitrate control. But is it worth it with x265? I ran tests with the following settings: Single-Pass: Fast and efficient Two-Pass Turbo: Slightly faster with no-slow-firstpass=1 Two-Pass Baseline: Standard two-pass Results are in the table (and more in the article). Single-pass was about 2x faster and delivered similar overall quality, though slightly reduced low-frame quality. Turbo mode shaved 14% encoding time with minimal quality delta compared to 2-pass. Choose the best answer. 1) Two-pass takes twice as long as single-pass but delivers significantly better overall quality. 2) Two-pass takes slightly longer than single-pass but delivers significantly better quality. 3) Two-pass takes about the same as single-pass and delivers about the same quality but better low-frame quality. 4) It depends. 5) None of the above.
