A lot of the US looks like this - with confusing intersections, parking lots, and unsafe conditions for pedestrians. But, it doesn't have to... However, the reality is that most people in the US get around in cars, so we need to start with solutions that take into account creating safer conditions for everyone, whether you're driving, walking, or biking. This also presents a huge opportunity. Once we fix our streets to allow people to feel safe walking around, it sets the stage for creating new, smart developments where people actually enjoy being. This video looks at a notoriously dangerous and confusing intersection in Portland, Oregon, and reimagines how it could work better for everyone. There’s a problem in the US… a new traffic signal is popping up all over the country and many people don’t know how to use it This is called a HAWK signal and it’s designed to allow for safe pedestrian crossings while limiting delays for vehicle traffic. The design has proved to be confusing for many drivers though, and now it’s up to us to educate ourselves and others on what to do so we all know what to do when we come across one of these traffic signals. #trafficengineering #driverseducation

"I don't go downtown because I hate having to park far away and walk to my destination..." Maybe you've heard this from your friends or even said it yourself. But is this really a problem with downtowns, or is it a problem with how we perceive parking distance?

What makes a good street? There's often debate about fancy traffic control devices and signage, but in many cases, simplicity is key. This street in Copenhagen serves drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians without anything complicated. With a single lane in each direction for vehicles, a physically separated bike path, and a sidewalk, everyone has their own space to travel however they choose.

People always say the US has a long way to go when it comes to being walkable and bikeable. And while that is true in a lot of places, that doesn't mean progress isn't happening. Across the country, communities are pushing to improve our infrastructure—one piece at a time—and it's making a real difference. Projects like the newly expanded TART trail in the City of Traverse City, Michigan is an exciting example of what great multimodal transportation infrastructure looks like. With physical separation between the sidewalk, bike path, and road, it ensures that everyone—whether walking, cycling, or driving—can feel safe and comfortable as they get around.
