About us

Surestep: A Revolutionary Bracing Concept Surestep is the most effective means of providing stability to children who pronate when standing and walking. This patented, dynamic system allows children to gain stability, while still allowing normal movement and function. Children with low muscle tone who have trouble with stability due to pronation can now walk, run and jump without the delays and instabilities that often result. Surestep is not a different brace, but rather a completely unique system that manages the foot and ankle without over-managing. Surestep is a revolutionary concept in bracing, specifically designed for children with normal to lower muscle tone who: 1. Realize moderate to severe pronation when standing and/or walking. 2. Display a general instability when pulling to stand and during cruising. 3. Have developmental delays and are late in learning to advance beyond cruising around furniture. 4. Are under 85 pounds. The Surestep system was developed for children with low muscle tone. These children display moderate to severe pronation upon weight bearing (excessively flat feet when standing). The majority of the children currently wearing the Surestep system are diagnosed with Down Syndrome, Hypo-tonic CP or Developmental Delay. Other orthotic devices work by wedging the foot into place. These wedges do not actually grab and control the foot. The Surestep system works on an entirely different principle than other orthotic devices. The thin flexible plastic allows the SureStep to be tightened completely around the foot. This circumferential pressure creates a sort of fluidic or hydrostatic pressure within the orthosis. This helps to align the skeletal anatomy of the foot and allow for better alignment of the entire lower extremities.

  • We’re celebrating Chris “Schu” Schumacher for 15 years with Surestep! Schu worked as a pediatric orthotist for 10 years before joining Surestep in technical services to help orthotists and PTs find bracing solutions. He's also now our CAD/CAM supervisor, generating and rectifying TLSO and KO designs in CAD. Around the office, Schu enjoys helping his coworkers feel good about who they are personally and what they do at Surestep. In his spare time, he goes camping, snowmobiling, and hiking along Lake Michigan. Happy anniversary, Schu! 🎉
