About us
A joint collaboration between the Agence Française de Développement (AFD) and the Observer Research Foundation (ORF), the Sustainable Finance in the Indo-Pacific Development Network (SUFIP DN) seeks to foster cooperation and exchange of knowledge aimed at strengthening collaboration and responses to developmental challenges in the Indo-Pacific region. The SUFIP DN initiative originated from the Sustainable Finance in the Indo-Pacific (SUFIP) conference, which took place in February 2022, prior to the EU ministerial Forum for Cooperation in the Indo-Pacific. This gathering brought together various public development banks (PDBs) and development financing institutions (DFIs) across Europe and the Indo-Pacific. The SUFIP DN is a continuation of this conference to create, connect, and build a pool of experts to enhance research in this domain.”

💰 The Climate Finance Gap: A Call to Action Despite climate finance more than doubling from 2018 to 2022, the journey is far from over. To align with the 1.5°C pathway, global climate finance must quintuple to US $7.4 trillion annually by 2030. At SUFIP, we bring experts to strategize on how we can close this monumental financing gap, particularly in the Indo-Pacific. By accelerating sustainable investments and innovative financing solutions, we aim to secure a climate-resilient future for all. #ClimateFinance #1Point5Degrees #SustainableDevelopment #IndoPacific #SUFIP

🌿 A Renewable Surge: Climate Financing in 2023 In 2023, global climate finance surpassed US $1.5 trillion, driven by significant investments in renewable energy (RE) and low-carbon transport. This milestone highlights a growing commitment to decarbonization—but much more is needed to achieve climate resilience, particularly in the Indo-Pacific. At SUFIP, we bring together experts to craft innovative strategies that channel investments into sustainable energy and inclusive solutions for a greener future. Let’s collaborate to amplify this momentum and meet the region’s pressing climate goals. #ClimateFinance #EnergyTransition #RenewableEnergy #LowCarbonTransport #IndoPacific #SUFIP Image source: getty

⚡ Financing the Shift: Energy Transition in the Indo-Pacific Global fossil fuel investments hit US $1.1 trillion in 2023, while subsidies soared to a record US $1.4 trillion in 2022—highlighting the urgent need to shift capital toward renewable energy. The Indo-Pacific, as one of the fastest-growing energy markets, must bridge significant financing gaps to meet its energy transition goals. At SUFIP, we bring together experts to think of innovative financing pathways that prioritize clean energy systems, policy reform, and inclusive solutions. #EnergyTransition #ClimateFinance #SustainableDevelopment #IndoPacific #SUFIP image source: getty

🌊 The Indo-Pacific: Harnessing Ocean-Based Climate Solutions 🌏 The Indo-Pacific, home to some of the world’s most vital marine ecosystems, holds immense potential to bridge the global emissions gap. Ocean-based solutions could reduce emissions by up to 35% on a 1.5°C pathway and 47% on a 2.0°C pathway by 2050. This highlights the ocean as a key ally in climate action, not merely a victim of the climate crisis. At SUFIP DN, we bring experts to look at financing pathways to unlock the ocean’s potential for the Indo-Pacific, ensuring these solutions are integrated into the region's climate and development strategies. From blue carbon projects to sustainable fisheries and coastal protection, the future of the Indo-Pacific’s resilience starts with our oceans. #OceanSolutions #IndoPacific #ClimateAction #BlueEconomy #SustainableFinance #SUFIP photo credit: getty

🌏 Indo-Pacific: Ground Zero for the Air Pollution Crisis Air pollution remains the most pressing environmental health challenge, causing over 6.5 million deaths annually, with 70% of these fatalities occurring in the Indo-Pacific region. Toxic air exacerbates chronic illnesses such as respiratory diseases, heart conditions, and neurological impairments, making this crisis a dire public health priority. As the Indo-Pacific continues its journey towards clean energy and sustainability, urgent action is needed to address air quality. At SUFIP DN, we bring experts to brainstorm collaborative financing solutions that bridge climate resilience and health, driving impactful change for a healthier and more sustainable Indo-Pacific. #ClimateHealth #AirPollutionCrisis #IndoPacific #SustainableDevelopment #SUFIP photo credit: getty

🌍 Energy Transition 2024: Challenges and Milestones for the Indo-Pacific In 2024, the Indo-Pacific made strides toward energy transition, but significant gaps remain. The region, which accounts for a quarter of the world’s energy demand, still grapples with high dependence on fossil fuels, responsible for over 75% of global greenhouse gas emissions. Despite efforts to expand renewable energy capacity, COP29 failed to deliver actionable commitments on fossil fuel phase-outs. Meanwhile, the region faces an urgent need for US$190 billion annually to accelerate its clean energy transition—a figure far beyond current investments. As the energy crisis deepens, SUFIP DN continues to bring experts together to figure out pathways for innovative financing solutions and collaborative action. #EnergyTransition #IndoPacific #SustainableFinance #ClimateAction #COP2 photo credit: getty

🌿 Biodiversity Financing: Falling Short of Promises Developed nations are significantly lagging in their pledge to deliver US$20 billion annually for international biodiversity financing by 2025. The Global Biodiversity Framework Fund (GBFF), central to the Kunming-Montreal goals, has only reached US$407 million, far from what is needed. Efforts to repurpose subsidies harmful to nature remain stagnant, jeopardizing critical 2030 biodiversity targets. As divisions persist between donor and developing countries, the path to equitable financing grows steeper, threatening the global biodiversity agenda. At #SUFIP DN, we bring together experts to look at innovative financing solutions to bridge this gap, and prioritize urgent action to meet biodiversity and climate resilience goals. #Biodiversity #ClimateFinance #SustainableDevelopment #SUFI

🌿 Biodiversity and Health: A Unified Path Forward At #COP16, the launch of the Global Action Plan on Biodiversity and Health underscores the critical links between ecosystem health, human well-being, and climate resilience. By adopting a "One Health" approach, the strategy addresses shared drivers like deforestation, pollution, and climate change to curb zoonotic and non-communicable diseases. The plan calls for nations to integrate biodiversity-health considerations across sectors and collaborate with organizations like WHO to build monitoring frameworks. Special focus is placed on empowering vulnerable communities, including Indigenous peoples and youth, who are key to conservation and resilience. At #SUFIP DN, we bring together experts to amplify such efforts, by finding innovative financing solutions to enhance health and climate resilience in the Indo-Pacific. #Biodiversity #OneHealth #ClimateResilience #SustainableDevelopment #SUFIPDN
