The Center for Sustainable Democracy (CSD) is a nonpartisan, multi-disciplinary research center focusing on challenges posed to and opportunities for democracy and civil society in the 21st century. Sustainable democracy means governance, information, and societal processes that empower people to make informed decisions and engage in public life. CSD emphasizes research and engagement regarding how political and civic leaders, journalists, and everyday individuals sustain democratic life in Florida, the United States, and globally. The Center is housed in the College of Arts & Sciences at the University of South Florida.

🤘 Proud Moment at USF 🤘 👉 https://lnkd.in/eGTpqFyF I was honored to participate as a panelist in the "Science Communication, Evidence, and Accountability" session at the recent COVID Conversations two-day conference, hosted by USF Health in partnership with the University of South Florida chapter of the Heterodox Academy. To me, this event exemplified the power of open, evidence-based dialogue on complex and polarizing topics like the COVID-19 pandemic. It was a privilege to engage in constructive discussions with scientists representing diverse viewpoints, including Martin Kulldorff, author of the Great Barrington Declaration. Sharing ideas and debating with such a variety of voices highlighted how essential respectful disagreement is for advancing science and rebuilding trust in public health (something we need badly). It was also a privilege to share the stage with Joshua M. Scacco, PhD who brought such valuable insights about the intimate connection between public health and democracy and the need for centering trusted sources, which set the stage for a fantastic discussion. It was a distinct honor to share the experience with so many USF leaders, including Charles Lockwood, Donna Petersen, Jay Wolfson, Sten Vermund, Kami Kim...and more...who contributed such meaningful reflections to this important event. Kudos to USF for modeling civic dialogue at its best - embracing viewpoint diversity and fostering intellectual humility. A special thank you to Amber Gum and Lynn Martin for the invitation and bringing this event to life! Media coverage can inadvertently create an atmosphere of fear, which can chill public participation in the election process, play into the hands of extremists, or be used to justify government crackdowns. Reporting in line with best practices can help to mitigate these risks."
