Narrated by Forest Whitaker and directed by Jake Sumner, “Seaweed Stories” is a vibrant, global look at the wonders of seaweed, and some of the extraordinary stories and characters whose lives have been entangled by this often overlooked marine organism. From Sway creating plastic alternatives from macroalgae, to the Indigenous Shinnecock Kelp Farmers using seaweed to prove their sovereign right to coastal land, and a scientist in South Korea supporting seaweeds’ sexual reproduction to create new species that can withstand the effects of a changing climate, the film shares how seaweed may hold answers to some of humanity’s biggest challenges… Presented by Lonely Whale in association with Re:wild. Made possible by the generous support of executive producers Phillip Sarofim, Trousdale Ventures, MAVRIK CORP., and co-executive producer The Snider Foundation. This is major. Sway, which won first place in the TOM FORD Plastic Innovation Prize powered by Lonely Whale in 2023, has just launched their Innovation Coalition. Together with prAna, Faherty Brand, Alex Crane, and Florence Marine X, Sway's Innovation Coalition is helping test and launch their certified home compostable alternative to tradition polybags. Dive deeper, learn more from Sway below. ⤵
This #compostable bag is made with #seaweed – and now, it’s being used by your favorite brands!! In case you don’t know us already, we’re Sway, a material innovation startup based in California. Since the announcement of our patented Thermoplastic Seaweed technology earlier this year, Sway has been hard at work scaling it into a viable replacement for a particularly pesky kind of plastic: the polybag. Polybags protect products from the time they’re manufactured until they arrive at your doorstep, ensuring your purchase arrives in pristine condition. 180 *billion* plastic polybags are used annually in the fashion industry alone – it’s time for an upgrade. Through much trial and error, we have optimized this material into a versatile, durable format that can withstand global supply chains. With seaweed as its hero ingredient, this bag helps to divert petroleum and support healthy ecosystems and communities. And while it competes with plastic’s performance, it won’t last forever – returning to nature through home and industrial composting 🌱🌞🐛 Learn more at swaythefuture.com/pilot 🌊

This fall has been full of opportunities to connect with our community of collaborators, and it was wonderful to be back at See Change Sessions this year—an event that always leaves our team inspired and brimming with new ideas. Our Prize Director Tim Silman, MPP, MBA joined Sebastien Bregeaud of Notpla, a TOM FORD Plastic Innovation Prize, powered by Lonely Whale, winner, Early Adopter partners Atlantic Packaging and Burton Snowboards, and a host of friends both old and new, in exploring and developing a new vision for the future of sustainable packaging, and environmental sustainability as a whole. Our key takeaways? 🤝 Carving out space and time to connect is critical Taking time to connect to the outdoors, ourselves, and each other can refresh enthusiasm for our work and purpose. We left inspired and optimistic, but still grounded and ready to roll up our sleeves. 📦 We need to tackle incentives for #innovation in new ways In the context of packaging, cost and scale remain the biggest obstacles for the sustainable transition. But with new regulations in Europe coming online and projected to spread out to other pockets of the globe, there may be opportunities that emerge beyond the obvious that we aren’t seeing yet to leverage this as an inflection point. We didn’t come up with the answers, but we’re hopeful! 🎬 #Storytelling and #culture need to reflect the process, not just the end result Marketing most often centers on products alone but to embed sustainability into culture, the process of product creation is a valuable and underutilized storytelling element. Going from raw materials to a product at your doorstep is kind of magic! We’ve peeled back layers of that story together with our Prize winners and Early Adopter Coalition members, like Burton Snowboards, as part of our Unwrap the Future program. Diving deep into connection, innovation, and storytelling is critical to embedding sustainability and culture. And, ICYMI, regulations, particularly in Europe, will require changes in storytelling, so now is the time to activate a new approach. What would you add to the list above? Share in the comments.

We’re looking forward to today's conversation with Six Senses Hotels Resorts Spas about the state of #plastic pollution and impactful strategies and solutions to reduce waste across the #hospitality industry. We’ll also dive into their new "#SixSenses Journey to Plastic Freedom Playbook," a comprehensive guide featuring 82 proven solutions for eliminating plastic in key hotel areas. Join us: https://lnkd.in/gbCee5iz
An invitation to join the movement #SixSenses focuses on eliminating plastic, rather than just recycling. Pollution from plastic occurs during production, extraction, use and disposal. By the time it is recycled (if it gets recycled), much of the environmental damage is already done. Six Senses knew from the outset that its suppliers would be critical stakeholders, which is why all purchasing teams and suppliers were brought on board with the vision of the brand to become plastic free and invited to share the pledge to eliminate plastic. Six Senses learned it was not alone in its concern and suppliers were open to implementing alternatives and collaborating to develop workable solutions. To register for the Six Senses Plastic Freedom Webinar on Wednesday November 6.** **All attendees will receive a downloadable PDF copy of the playbook.

Double your #impact — donations matched this November. For every dollar raised for Lonely Whale, Re:wild, and other climate nonprofits, Commons, a rewards app that harnesses collective action to make a positive impact on the planet, will match it with a donation to Lonely Whale, up to $3,000. As a 1% for the Planet member, Commons’ support is helping build awareness and financial backing for our mission at Lonely Whale. We’re honored to stand with Re:wild and Commons—together, we can inspire lasting change. Join the challenge, donate to support our work: https://lnkd.in/e2-gv47c
