If you find yourself constantly craving sugar, you may need to address one or more of these things: • LACK OF CARBS Carbs in their most basic form break down to sugar. Including quality whole food sources with meals and quick carb options around training is key. Your body needs carbs for energy!! You will likely crave carbs (in the form of sugary foods) if you aren’t eating enough of them. • LACK OF PROTEIN Protein plays a key role in balancing blood sugar and keeping you full and satisfied. Student athletes should aim for 0.8-1g/b bodyweight daily. • NUTRIENT DEFICIENCIES A lack of nutrients like b vitamins and iron can lead to fatigue, causing you to seek out sugary foods that give a quick energy boost. • LACK OF SLEEP Poor sleep makes you more sensitive to food reward and affects the release of appetite-regulating hormones. This may cause you to seek out energy-dense foods that are low in nutrients. • POORLY HYDRATED Fluids help move nutrients throughout the body and keep you in peak cognitive condition. A poor hydration status can lead to fatigue and decreased cognitive function, causing you to seek out highly processed options. • TOO STRICT An all-or-nothing mindset that severely limits all sugar-containing foods may lead to greater cravings for those foods. Rather than a perfectionist mindset, shift toward a more flexible mindset! Choose one area to improve and start small. If you don’t know where to start, consider reaching out and working with us! Save & share with a someone who would find this helpful!
