New Mexico is making strides with its Clean Transportation Fuel Standard (CTFS), aiming to drive demand for biofuels and other low-carbon fuels. Modeled after programs in California, Oregon, and Washington, the CTFS sets ambitious goals of reducing the carbon intensity of transportation fuels by 20% by 2030 and 30% by 2040. This initiative is expected to open new markets for biofuel producers while supporting the state's climate targets. The Environmental Improvement Board, with input from diverse stakeholders, is working toward full implementation by 2026.
