About us

The Barnes Family started DAISY in 1999 to say a profound thank you to nurses for the extraordinary skill and compassion they provide patients and families every day. Our experience with nurses during son Patrick Barnes' eight week hospitalization showed us that direct care nurses do super-human work that is rarely recognized. We had no idea that today, more than 5,000 healthcare facilities and schools of nursing in all 50 states and 32 other countries and territories would honor their nurses all year long with The DAISY Award. Over 2,100,000 nominations have been written, describing how a nurse has impacted a patient or family. Clearly, the Barnes Family are not the only people compelled to say thank you to nurses! The strategic value of this kind of meaningful recognition is now being proven in research study after study. Impacts include contribution to a healthy work environment, nurse satisfaction, compassion satisfaction, patient satisfaction, and cultural transformation. It's remarkable what happens when a healthcare organization focuses some attention on all the good that's going on. We also honor nursing students with The DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nursing Students and nursing faculty with the DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nursing Faculty. Through our J. Patrick Barnes Grants, we support nursing research and EBP projects with grants to nurses.

  • Celebrating the Legacy of Dr. Linda Burnes Bolton: A Compassionate Pioneer in Nursing Recognition The DAISY Foundation deeply mourns the loss of Dr. Linda Burnes Bolton, a luminary in nursing leadership whose visionary work has left an indelible mark on the nursing profession. Dr. Burnes Bolton was a trailblazer who recognized the profound importance of meaningful recognition in nursing. More than two decades ago, Dr. Burnes Bolton welcomed the DAISY Award to Cedars-Sinai, making it the third organization worldwide to embrace this program. Her decision to adopt the DAISY Award exemplified her deep commitment to compassionate care and nursing excellence. Her leadership was transformative, blending unwavering professionalism with genuine care and advocacy for health equity. Dr. Burnes Bolton was instrumental in shaping healthcare policy and advancing the nursing profession, not only at Cedars-Sinai but across the nation. She was known for her revolutionary approaches to patient-centered care, nursing education, and community health, all anchored by her belief in the power of human caring. As we remember her incredible contributions, we are reminded of her words from a 2014 address to the American Organization for Nursing Leadership: "The essence of nursing is human caring, and that essence drives me every day. It is a gift to the world that nurses give and why we continue to be the most trusted profession in the United States." Dr. Burnes Bolton's legacy will continue to inspire and influence generations of nurses. Her early and enthusiastic support of the DAISY Award has helped countless patients and families express their gratitude for the nurses who have touched their lives, enhancing the culture of appreciation within healthcare. The DAISY Foundation extends its heartfelt condolences to her family, colleagues, and everyone touched by her remarkable life. As we celebrate Dr. Burnes Bolton's enduring impact, we reaffirm our mission to recognize the extraordinary in the nursing profession, a cause she championed with passion and grace.

  • In the face of heartbreak, Yissel has gone above and beyond for a family navigating a devastating diagnosis for their young loved one. From translating for the family to being their steadfast advocate, she has demonstrated unwavering dedication and compassion. Yissel went above and beyond by staying late to translate during meetings, visiting on her day off, and bringing blue raspberry popsicles because it was the patient’s only request. Her kindness, compassion, and selflessness remind us of the incredible impact nurses can have. Congratulations of being a DAISY Honoree, Yissel!
