'Abundance: The Farmlink Story' is live. When we started this project three years ago, we were just a bunch of college kids, looking to do something—anything—to help out our neighbors facing food insecurity. Today, we are a national nonprofit that has delivered over 130 million pounds of food to people across the entire country. We're on a mission to end hunger within our lifetimes. Our film explains how. We are thrilled to share 'Abundance: The Farmlink Story' with you today and invite you to join us in sharing this film and vision for a hunger-free future with your community.

It's no secret that many Americans are struggling to afford groceries. With rising food prices and over 60% of Americans living paycheck to paycheck, the security of knowing where the next meal is coming from is increasingly out of reach. In 2020, we witnessed nurses lining up at food banks during their lunch breaks—amid the largest health crisis in history, those protecting the public couldn’t afford their own groceries. This injustice persists across states and industries. This fall, we set out to capture stories of resilience and hope from those facing these challenges. Coy Young, a lifelong cattle rancher from Missouri, was forced to sell his cattle due to rising costs, losing both his livelihood and identity. He told us, “Everyone else is making money off you while you're going broke, feeding the world while you're doing it.” Despite the loss, Coy remains an advocate for ranchers across the country. He has formed a support group for other ranchers on the verge of losing their farms and testified before Congress to fight for their rights. In Bakersfield, California, Oliva—a farmworker who, along with many others, grows and harvests produce that fills grocery stores, yet she struggles to feed her own family. She and her community continue to volunteer at a weekly food distribution, supporting others in need. Rhonda, a school counselor in Dallas supporting over 900 students, works tirelessly to provide stability for her community while grappling to make ends meet. “Most people are struggling right now, teachers included. We have teachers who rely on the food bank for everything,” she shared with us. These stories reflect the depth of America’s hunger crisis. At Farmlink, we are committed to delivering food to those in need and celebrating the quiet heroes who are fighting for their communities. Over the coming weeks, we’ll share more about Coy, Oliva, and Rhonda’s experiences as we open the conversation: Who is struggling to afford groceries?

We are so excited to announce that we have been selected as an Innovation Sprint Partner by Agriculture Innovation Mission for Climate (AIM for Climate), a global initiative launched at COP26 to accelerate climate-smart agriculture. This recognition reflects the collective effort of the farmers, farm workers, drivers, community leaders, and communities we work with to create a more resourceful and equitable food system. At Farmlink, we’re scaling food recovery to ensure surplus food nourishes people instead of generating methane—a greenhouse gas responsible for 12% of global emissions. By preventing waste in the first place, we’re buying critical time to slow warming while we work toward long-term solutions. As leaders gather at COP29 to accelerate climate action, we are reminded of why we do this work every day no matter what—to build a future where human and planetary health thrive, and food security and climate stability go hand in hand. Last week, we co-hosted a briefing in Congress on the importance of food recovery as a key hunger and climate solution! In conjunction with the Food Recovery Caucus and Representatives Dan Newhouse and Chellie Pingree, the event created a space for farmers, government agencies, nonprofit organizations, and industry leaders to educate Hill offices on the countless co-benefits of food recovery. The bipartisan event demonstrated the critical importance of bringing together stakeholders across the food supply chain to address hunger and food waste collaboratively. Redirecting the surplus of food grown in this country to the charitable food distribution network is a proven solution to reducing the 30% of food wasted annually in the United States. As food insecurity rises, with 13.5% of Americans experiencing hunger at some point in 2023, it is more important than ever to identify bipartisan solutions that mobilize public-private partnerships. We were honored to hear from Jean Buzby (USDA Food Loss and Waste Liaison), Kim Watt (Owner of Timber Ridge Fruit Farm), Carlos Rodriguez (Chief Policy and Operations Officer at City Harvest), Erin Morris (Associate Administrator at USDA-Agricultural Marketing Service), Laura Abshire (Director of Sustainability Policy and Government Affairs at National Restaurant Association), and Eva Goulbourne (Founder of Littlefoot Ventures) at the event. We look forward to continuing to collaborate with stakeholders across sectors to champion the key opportunities for food recovery in Congress. A very special thanks to the fellow co-hosts and collaborators: Food Systems Collaborative, Food Recovery Network, Patelana Group, and Shipt for your partnership and support!
