Growing Tomorrow's Detroit
About us
Our Mission Statement: Inspiring sustainable growth of a healthy urban community through trees, green spaces, food, education, training and job opportunities. We aspire to provide a greener tomorrow for our Detroit. The Greening of Detroit is a well-established nonprofit resource agency with a long history of successful and progressive initiatives. All of our work adds economic value to the communities we serve, and focuses on using land in a way that improves quality of life, has environmental integrity and promotes education and stewardship. Most of all, The Greening provides hope for the future of the city of Detroit. Between 1950 and 1980, around 500,000 trees were lost in Detroit to Dutch elm disease, urban expansion and attrition. During that same time, economic constraints prohibited the city from replacing those trees. The Greening of Detroit was founded in 1989 with a single focus in mind – restore the city's tree infrastructure. At The Greening, we believe in tomorrow's Detroit and expect to play a significant role in the development to this great city. The abundance of vacant land – spanning more than 20 square miles of the city – allows for a blank canvas of opportunity and new beginnings. That means more room for trees, green open spaces, prairies, urban farms and pocket parks. It also means job opportunities for city kids and adult workforce trainees. We look forward to working with our community residents to grow tomorrow's Detroit.

Black leaders have been helping to drive Michigan’s environmental movement for decades, yet they often face systemic barriers to resources, networks, and institutional support. To help bridge this gap, the Environmental Council launched Community of Practice—a peer learning network designed to connect and strengthen BIPOC executive directors leading environmental organizations in Detroit. Lionel Bradford, President and executive director of The Greening of Detroit, participated in the first cohort and shared how this space has supported his leadership journey. Congratulations to Lionel Bradford as one of McGregor Fund's 2025 Miller Fellows!
Introducing the McGregor Fund's 2025 Miller Fellows! 📍 DeLashea Strawder, Executive & Artistic Director Mosaic Youth Theatre of Detroit 📍 Willie Bell, Founder & CEO Family Assistance for Renaissance Men 📍 Nicole Wilson, Executive Director The Yunion 📍 Lionel Bradford, President & Executive Director The Greening of Detroit From McGregor Fund President Kate Levin Markel: "We are delighted to announce the 2025 cohort of the Eugene A. Miller Fellowship Program — four distinguished leaders who determined that this was their year to take time away from their organizations to rest, reflect, and recharge. Please read on to learn more about DeLashea Strawder, Lionel Bradford, Nicole Wilson, and Willie Bell, each of whom has demonstrated extraordinary leadership in their fields. We deeply recognize the significance of answering the call to rest amidst such turbulent and uncertain times. However, as detailed in our most recent biennial report, Miller Fellows have taught us that working to exhaustion and burnout is itself an injustice. As we celebrate this year’s cohort, we also ask our funding peers and our broader community to support them and their organizations as they navigate the coming months while honoring the call to rest. On behalf of the McGregor Fund Board of Trustees and staff, I’d like to extend congratulations to this year’s Miller Fellows, thank them for all they have given to our community, and wish them well as they prepare for their well-earned sabbaticals." We have the goal of planting 75,000 trees between 2023 and 2028. The Greening of Detroit, DTE Energy, and City of Detroit celebrated reaching 25,000 trees in the ground with a special planting today. The group is organized as the Detroit Tree Equity Partnership. The ceremony, held at Detroit’s Bailey Park in the McDougall-Hunt neighborhood, featured Senator Debbie Stabenow, Mayor Mike Duggan, DTE Chairman Jerry Norcia, Bailey Park Neighborhood Development Corporation Founder Katrina Watkins, and our President Lionel Bradford. Thank you to all who joined us and helped us celebrate this milestone!
