My HR stars of 2024! ✨ As the year wraps up, I wanted to highlight a few humans in the HR space that have made my year more wonderful. In no particular order... Christine Song - her content is incredible. I feel like Christine writes as she speaks - she is authentically her and leads her team so well. Plus, she has been in the space long enough to see it evolve. She is a wealth of knowledge and I am so grateful we finally met in person this year! Alex Seiler - probably one of my biggest highlights of 2024. This man is as hilarious as he is brilliant. He is an incredible thought partner for any HR challenge and is a friend who will always be in your corner. Amy Mencarelli, PHR, MBA - she is the definition of consistent. I would recommend checking her out if you want inspiration on daily HR tips that are truly applicable, right away. Amanda Halle - our Queen of AI for HR. She has done such a fantastic job in moving us forward in this space. All while having twins! It has been a big year for Amanda, which she has shared about so openly, which is incredible to see. Melanie Naranjo - now, longtime HR friend. She is always on my list. Having met before she was a LinkedIn star, I can guarantee she really is as incredible as she seems in real life. Mel, thank you for always being there to chat. Ethena is so lucky to have you! Daniel Huerta - I've loved every chat we've had this year. Whether casual or podcast, you are one of the most thoughtful question-askers! Appreciate you being so consistent with The Modern People Leader. It is truly one of my favourite HR podcasts. Hebba Youssef - you are inspiring. You've built a community that is so real and so valuable and it was truly a pleasure finally meeting in real life. You share your views so clearly and this has been a huge year for you!! Elles Skony - you've knocked it out of the park with Fractional People People. You saw a need and built a resource for anyone in the People space looking to go fractional. You are the definition of seeing something we needed and making it happen. Thank you for helping so many this year! Anessa Fike - the inspiration for Fractional work. It was a pleasure meeting you in real life. I appreciate you being a pioneer in the space and sharing your learnings and perspectives so openly! Kim Minnick - what can I say. You really walk the talk. You wanted to build a business in a transparent way and you've truly gone above and beyond. I know 2025 will be the year where you hit and exceed your monthly goals and I can't wait to follow along your journey! There are more of you, like Luke O'Mahoney, Adam Horne and Joel Lalgee, whom I also wanted to call out, but alas - character limit! I think this really goes to show that operating alone in HR is not a thing. We need each other. HR Knows the Problems. Why Aren’t We Solving Them? Burnout in HR isn’t a mystery—it’s a crisis. Fourth-quarter medical leaves. Mass exits from the profession. An overwhelming sense of “we’re not okay.” Colin H. Mincy doesn’t mince words: “We know the problems. They are lingering, well-dialogued, clear problems. We’re just not dealing with them.” What’s Really Holding HR Back? • The Same Names, The Same Stories: Ask any cross-functional group: Who derails progress? Who creates toxic environments? You’ll hear the same names. • Clarity & Fairness Are Missing: Promotions depend on managers, not merit. Decision-making lacks transparency. These aren’t new issues—they’re just unresolved. • Harm vs. Healing: HR tries to heal organizations while leaders perpetuate harm. “We’re fixing one thing and waiting for the next shoe to drop.” What keeps Colin up at night isn’t identifying the problems—it’s the paralysis around fixing them. He calls out the all-or-nothing mindset: “If 90% of an idea works but 10% doesn’t feel right, nothing happens. We need to reject that. Why DEIB Is the Key to Making Octillions Octillions. That’s a number with 37 zeros—a scale of abundance almost impossible to imagine. But Michael C. Bush, CEO at Great Place To Work US, believes it’s within reach, and diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging (DEIB) is the key to unlocking it. The future of AI and humanity’s potential isn’t about scarcity—it’s about abundance for all. Bush envisions a world where everyone has access to clean water, a sustainable environment, and equal opportunities. By expanding the pie to include everyone, we don’t just grow—it becomes infinite.
