Bringing people together to grow, cook & share nourishing food, with goals of cultivating community & alleviating hunger
About us
The Nashville Food Project was born from the idea that ALL people should have access to the food they want and need. We know that one in seven people in Nashville lacks access to enough food to sustain a healthy lifestyle. But we also know that more than 40% of all the food in our city goes to waste. Solutions to hunger take much more than simple handouts. Poverty, unemployment, low wages and escalating housing costs all contribute to the challenges that the most vulnerable residents of our city face. We believe food can be a powerful tool to foster health, belonging and justice in our community. That’s why we... Grow — In our gardens, we grow organic food intensively, and share resources with others interested in growing their own food. Cook — In our kitchens, we use recovered, donated and garden-grown food to prepare and cook made-from-scratch meals. Share — In our community, we share nourishing meals in partnership with local poverty-disrupting nonprofits and community groups. The Nashville Food Project embraces a vision of vibrant community food security in which everyone in Nashville has access to the food they want and need through a just and sustainable food system.

Food connects us, nourishes us, and strengthens our community. In North Nashville, where access to fresh food is limited, The Nashville Food Project plays a vital role in the Heart of Nashville program to improve health outcomes. Through nutritious, heart-healthy meals and education, we’re addressing issues like uncontrolled hypertension while supporting wraparound care in partnership with NashvilleHealth and Matthew Walker Comprehensive Health Center. Check out the video and join us as we grow, cook, and share nourishing food—because everyone deserves access to the nourishment they need. Together, we’re building a community where everyone has a seat at the table.

Twice a week, our delivery truck arrives at Begin Anew of Middle Tennessee filled with meals to nourish adult learners before their evening English classes. The impact is twofold: while a nourished body can improve focus and learning, a shared meal is an invitation to build community across language and cultural barriers. Your gift this #GivingTuesday creates more of these life-changing moments around tables, and supports the work of other poverty-disrupting organizations by providing food for their program participants. This #GivingTuesday, our $20,000 goal supports a future where everyone has a place at the table. In 2024, we have shared over 330,000 meals with: 🥕 People pursuing housing security, financial stability, and English literacy 🥕 Families going through health challenges and major transitions 🥕 School-aged children, often providing their last meal of the day at after-care programs Your gift today helps us to continue to nourish these groups and so many more in our community, in body and spirit. https://lnkd.in/efKnKCCn

Last year, we grew over 9,500 pounds of produce at the Community Farm at Mill Ridge to share with volunteers, community gardeners, and food access partners. Unfortunately, we also had a pest problem last year, and we lost a few hundred pounds of produce that did not require refrigeration to mice and other hungry critters. One of the farm’s regular volunteers, Brennan, saw this problem firsthand, and referred us to apply for a grant through his company, Messer Construction Co., to support infrastructure at Mill Ridge. This fall, thanks to Messer, we will begin work on a temperature-controlled dry storage facility at the farm. This will provide much-needed additional capacity for storing food like tomatoes, garlic, potatoes, and winter squash — and help us limit waste by shielding it against pests! Thanks, Messer Construction Co.!

We're so grateful to have the support of the Buckingham Foundation!
Grantee Spotlight: The Nashville Food Project! Founded with a vision akin to that of Buckingham Foundation, the Tennessee-based nonprofit centers around collaborative, community-led solutions. This includes a scratch-made meals program, and urban agricultural programming, where community gardens flourish under the care of volunteers and so much more! Most of the ingredients shared in their meals come through their community partnerships such as Costco and Aldi. We are super proud to help support such an intentional and impactful organization. The Nashville Food Project reposted this
I loved reading about the awesome nonprofit collaboration between WATER WALKERS and The Nashville Food Project. Thanks to our Nashville-based team at Jackson for helping us get connected and support this impactful work.
At Jackson, we've been proud to sponsor The Nashville Food Project's Sweet Peas program for six years. This sponsorship helps them share healthy, made-from-scratch meals with nonprofits serving youth across #Nashville, filling the summer gap left by meals often received at school. Not only can you learn more about TNFP's program in this blog - but as with most things from this rich community organization, you can pick up a marinara recipe. :) #communityfood #foodinsecurity #foodjustice
