This Week’s #KindredMoments & #PraxisInAction ✨ This week, we’d like to uplift the incredible leadership of Dr. Kenneth M. Nole, Director of RISE Academy, and Joy Thomas, #RISEAcademy Coordinator. Dr. Nole and Ms. Thomas are shining examples of what it means to model developmental relationships. Their leadership goes beyond strategy—it’s rooted in deep connection, trust, and a genuine commitment to the growth and success of #RISE Scholars. Together, they’ve created a space where students feel seen, supported, and inspired to activate their spark. Thanks to their partnership, we’ve been able to facilitate programs covering: 🌟 #ConflictResolution 🌟 Navigating Transitions 🌟 #Wellness & Self-Care 🌟 Self-Advocacy 🌟 #TeamBuilding 🌟 Identity & Belonging And this week we wrapped up our fall sessions with an engaging exploration of #socialcapital. It’s been a privilege to connect with the 40 RISE Scholars through these conversations and witness their #curiosity and courage. Today we celebrate Dr. Nole and Ms. Thomas: Thank you for your unwavering dedication to the scholars and for modeling the power of authentic, transformative relationships. Your leadership continues to inspire us and elevate the work we do together. #togetherwerise -- #KindredMoments #PraxisInAction #LeadershipInAction #YouthDevelopment #AuthenticConnections #CommunityBuilding The Praxis Institute Kindred, LLC Jessica Juarez, M.Ed., LPC, NCC Fausto Alejandro López, M.Ed. Today, we wrapped up our 5-week installment of #SEARCH at West40 ISC #2 #SafeSchool, and what an incredible journey it’s been! Working with middle and high school students, we had the honor of creating and tailoring a program inspired by them. This year, we were deeply intentional about bringing #healing-centered engagement (HCE) practices to every session. #HCE emphasizes holistic approaches to support and uplift individuals, focusing on their strengths and courage rather than defining them by their challenges. For #Kindred and #Praxis, we are guided by #liberation psychology, positive youth development, and developmental relationships—all of which were the foundation of #SEARCH. ✨ Beyond the cover was a 5-week creative journey designed to help participants reclaim their narratives, explore their identities, and challenge labels placed on them by others. In a world that often misjudges or mislabels us, it’s easy to feel confined by stories that don’t reflect who we truly are. Through #art, #storytelling, and group #reflection, we explored counter-narratives, rewriting outdated stories and creating new ones rooted in growth, fortitude, and authenticity. Each session focused on a different chapter of their lives—from cultural roots to future dreams—offering space to express themselves and connect with one another. 🎨 What you see here are youths’ #counternarratives, their identities and cultures magnified. Their stories, written in their words, are paired with powerful visual representations—both hand-drawn and @Canva created images (many using #Canva for the first time!). We are eternally grateful for the #West40 community, the staff, and the brilliance that radiates from these scholars. They remind us that growth, determination, and transformation happen when we create space for authentic expression and connection. 💛 Here’s to continuing the journey of rewriting stories and amplifying the truths that often go untold. #HealingCenteredEngagement #BeyondTheCover #KindredCommunity #YouthVoices #PraxisInAction #PositiveYouthDevelopment Kindred, LLC + The Praxis Institute Jessica Juarez, M.Ed., LPC, NCC Fausto Alejandro López, M.Ed. "People will be truly critical if they live in the plenitude of the #praxis... that is, if their action encompasses a critical reflection which increasingly organizes their thinking... leading them to move from a purely naive knowledge of reality to a higher level, one which enables them to perceive the causes of reality." #PauloFreire #PedagogyoftheOppressed #sacredpraxis The Praxis Institute #communitiesofpraxis Jessica Juarez, M.Ed., LPC, NCC Fausto Alejandro López, M.Ed. After years of leading data collaboratives for Chicago's youth programs and working with hundreds of agencies, The Praxis Institute has learned that anyone can enjoy talking about data and evaluation. In this blog, we share: - How we transformed boring data sessions into engaging ones - Why Chicago Pizza helps people understand evaluation - Creative ways to share findings back with youth and staff Special shoutout to Evelyn Benitez, Maria Guzmán-Rocha, PhD and Eshawn Spencer, MS, CRC, LPC for giving us the space to experiment, be creative, and have fun with these sessions. To my partner in crime, Fausto Alejandro López, M.Ed., for showing us how to combine rigorous methods with genuine joy! "Do the best you can until you know better. Then when you know better, do better." - Maya Angelou But what if you could know better... right now? Our latest piece discusses practical ways to capture learning while it's happening. It features some real-time assessment tools we've found useful for gathering feedback across different areas of youth development (scroll to the bottom of the blog for that). Looking Back to Move Forward: Reflections on Continuous Improvement Four years ago, I wrote an article about democratizing evaluation in youth development. Like finding an old photo of yourself with questionable fashion choices, reading it recently made me cringe a little. The passion was there — you could feel it jumping off the page — but the depth? Not so much. https://lnkd.in/gisP9QCc #positiveyouthdevelopment #evaluation #continuousimprovement #mistakes #hindsight2020 #quality #lowstakes

#SPARK was designed to support youth in developing healthy relationships with substances. The public resource hub includes free resources accessible to anyone interested in starting this work. The facilitator portal provides lesson plans and resources developed through a partnership with #PublicHealth Institute of Metropolitan #Chicago (#PHIMC), The Praxis Institute, & Rudd Resources LLC. To develop the lessons we gathered insights from youth and #outofschooltime (OST) facilitators who highlighting the importance of trust, non-judgmental spaces, engaging activities, and honest, practical information. The portal is designed for facilitators in #afterschool programs, the curriculum is user-friendly and easily integrated, with downloadable #lessonplans that complement existing programs. Illinois Department of Human Services (IDHS) RSUPICs program funds and supports this work, which aims to bolster the capacity of youth programs to implement substance use prevention strategies effectively. By integrating with existing initiatives and focusing on local collaboration, training, and support, RSUPIC strives to improve the overall health and well-being of young people throughout the state.
