About us

The mission of the Preservation Alliance is to actively promote the appreciation, protection, and appropriate use and development of the Philadelphia region’s historic buildings, communities and landscapes. The Philadelphia region is rich in historic places. It is also home to countless people and organizations dedicated to the care and stewardship of our immense cultural and architectural heritage. The Preservation Alliance for Greater Philadelphia is a membership-based, not-for-profit advocacy organization that shines a spotlight on the places that make the Philadelphia region special and gives a voice and a toolbox to those who care deeply about protecting them for the future. Through educational outreach, planning efforts, and direct advocacy, the Preservation Alliance is the region’s principal public champion of our historic built environment. The Preservation Alliance for Greater Philadelphia was established in 1996 to be the principal historic preservation advocacy organization for the Philadelphia region. We grew out of a merger between two predecessor organizations: the Philadelphia Historic Preservation Corporation (established in 1979) and the Preservation Coalition of Greater Philadelphia (established in 1982), two distinct but complementary organizations with long track records in the city. Over the past 35 years, we’ve experienced our share of milestones, suffered some regrettable losses, and celebrated some important victories. We are unwavering in our conviction that Philadelphia is a better place today, and will be a better place tomorrow, thanks to the passion and devotion of our predecessors, and we are proud to carry this legacy into the future.

  • What an amazing tour of the historic Four Mills Barn this weekend! Designed by Horace Trumbauer in the 1890s, this barn is the last remaining piece of Charles Bergner’s estate and now serves as Wissahickon Trails’ headquarters. After major flooding during Tropical Storm Isaias in 2020, the barn underwent incredible rehabilitation efforts, including wet-proofing to manage flooding, moving offices to the second floor, and repurposing materials like old doors. Other highlights included fireproofing with original heavy beams and bird-safe window films. This project is a fantastic example of adapting historic buildings to modern challenges. Thank you to Kate Cowing, AIA NCARB APT-RP and Michaelle Fleisher for an inspiring tour!

  • The Preservation Alliance for Greater Philadelphia acknowledges the closure of Macy’s department store at the historic Wanamaker Building with a deep sense of loss. This marks the end of an era for a historic site that has been a cornerstone of Center City’s identity for generations. Despite this moment of change, we are confident in the Wanamaker Building’s future as a cherished landmark. The Grand Court, its crown jewel, is fully protected from demolition and inappropriate alteration by its 2017 designation on the Philadelphia Register of Historic Places. • The Young Friends of the Preservation Alliance (YFPA) had an amazing year, bringing together emerging leaders to protect and celebrate Philadelphia’s history. This year, YFPA raised awareness for the Church of the Advocate, hosted tours of unique sites like the Navy Yard and Chinatown, organized happy hours with allied groups, conducted a volunteer workday at Cliveden, launched a workshop series on practical preservation advice, and celebrated their annual fundraiser at the German Society of Pennsylvania. These efforts inspire a passion for preservation and build a connected community of advocates. Donate to our annual appeal to support their work: https://lnkd.in/ehFiKeJ2

The 2024 elections have resulted in Republican control in Washington for the next two years, after they won the White House and majorities in the House and Senate. With many of the provisions of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act expiring in 2025, Republicans will likely capitalize upon their election wins by using the budget reconciliation process in the 119th Congress to enact tax policy changes. Historic Rehab and Preservation Advocates must organize and act to make sure that improvements to the Historic Tax Credit do not get lost in the process!  Join the effort for 1000 interactions with Members of Congress to improve the Historic Tax Credit in the first 100 days of the 119th Congress, starting in early January 2025. Can we count on your voice in the first 100 days?  https://lnkd.in/esweAhg7 By signing up and providing your 9-digit zip code, you’ll receive talking points, updates, and the legislative staff contacts of your members of Congress to take action in the first 100 days of the 119th Congress. #RehabtheHTC
