President Carter paved way for whistleblower protections, open government One of the often overlooked, yet longest-lasting, achievements of President Jimmy #Carter was his commitment to protecting people who speak out against #wrongdoing. In 1978, Carter championed three major open government bills during his tenure: the Inspector General Act that created 12 independent inspectors general to investigate wrong-doing within U.S. agencies; the #Ethics in Government Act that aimed for an open government without conflicts of interest; and the Civil Service Reform Act that included protection for those who disclose information of wrong-doing and laid the groundwork for the landmark #Whistleblower Protection Act that was subsequently signed in 1989. When signing the Civil Service Reform Act in 1978, Carter said the new law “assures that whistleblowers will be heard, and that they will be protected from reprisal.” Worldwide, many countries still do not benefit from these whistleblower protection laws. That is why TSN actively supports whistleblowers in more than a dozen countries. We are proud to support whistleblowers in the U.S. who benefit from these protections today.” TSN is an international 501(c)3 organization that supports whistleblowers who have shared public interest information with the press. Founded in 2017, TSN provides end-to-end support to whistleblowers around the world and works with journalists to hold some the world’s most powerful institutions accountable. 📺 Youtube : https://lnkd.in/dae5NjjJ 👂 Apple : https://lnkd.in/dWj3kAbN 👂 Spotify : https://lnkd.in/da4Vn-3e 👂 Deezer : https://lnkd.in/dUWaFXCA 👂 Youtube Podcast : https://lnkd.in/dD4dnkrF

Thank you Diana Jean Schemo and Double Exposure Film Festival for allowing me to speak with investigative filmmakers and journalists about how to work responsibly with whistleblowers featured in their films. I was joined by 3 amazing co-panelists: (1) Peter Klein, whose new film Bribe, Inc. features an anonymous whistleblower who exposed a global bribery scandal whereby a small company called Unaoil allegedly facilitated bribes for major corporations looking to win contracts in the Middle East, (2) Jennifer Nelson, a senior staff attorney at Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press, and (3) Margaux Ewen, the Whistleblower Protection Program Director at The Signals Network. Double Exposure's Symposium connects journalists, filmmakers and other thought leaders with the goal of seeding investigative storytelling in the public interest. One of the stories that was successfully seeded at Double Exposure is Flight/Risk, a 2022 documentary by karim amer and Omar Mullick that features Whistleblower Partners LLP's client Ed Pierson. I approached Karim after a panel discussion on his film The Great Hack featuring whistleblower Brittany Kaiser, we started talking about whistleblowers and Boeing, and a film was born. Proof positive that #DXFest24 is the place to be if you want to make impactful films that call power to account.

If we want to live in a healthy democracy, we need to support the whistleblowers and investigative journalists empowering us to hold our governments and industries accountable. The question is, ‘How?’ Vote. Write your representatives. Pay attention to what they say about whistleblowers and more importantly, if they follow through. And consider financially supporting organizations that empower journalists and whistleblowers to share their voice and advocate for laws that protect our freedom. #HealthyDemocracy #SupportWhistleblowers #InvestigativeJournalism #Accountability #FreedomOfPress #ProtectWhistleblowers
