Today, a landmark case addressing discrimination against transgender folks is being heard before the Supreme Court. U.S. v Skrmetti is a case that will decide whether it is unconstitutional discrimination for Tennessee to ban certain medications for transgender youth that they allow for all other young people. The decision in Skrmetti may have widespread implications, including whether other state bans like Tennessee’s can stand, or whether they must also be struck down as unconstitutional. If Tennessee’s ban is upheld, a young person who is not transgender would be able to receive the same medication that is denied to another young person simply because they are transgender. We know that cases like this can be hard to understand. That’s why our latest blog post breaks down everything you need to know about U.S. v Skrmetti. Learn more and spread the word about why we should all be paying attention ⬇️ https://lnkd.in/gbSgHGfr #TheTrevorProject #SCOTUS #Skrmetti #Tennessee #TransLivesMater #LGBTQ #StateLegislation #TransgenderRights

On this International Day of Persons with Disabilities, we honor and celebrate all folks living with disabilities within the LGBTQ+ community. LGBTQ+ young people with disabilities often navigate both ableism and discrimination due to their sexual orientation, gender identity, or gender expression, creating unfair barriers to accessing equal opportunity. We’re working to build a world where everyone — and we mean everyone — is welcome and accepted. We know that disability is nuanced —some visible and some not. To those living with physical, mental, or emotional disabilities, impairments, or challenges — this International Day of Persons With Disabilities is a reminder that we need all able-bodied allies to work towards creating a more inclusive and accessible world 🌎 For all of us 🧡 #TheTrevorProject #DisabilityJustice #IDPD #LGBTQ #MentalHealth

When LGBTQ+ young people report feeling accepted by just one adult, their odds of attempting suicide are estimated to be more than 40% lower according to Trevor’s research. And for some of the LGBTQ+ young people who reach out to Trevor, our crisis counselors are the only affirming adults in their lives. Thanks to @sephora who is matching donations up to $20,000, we’re able to continue our life-saving work for these LGBTQ+ young people. Show your support and be the one to make a difference across the nation by giving a gift today 🧡 Donate here: https://lnkd.in/g3xx6HMZ

November is Native American Heritage Month — a time to reaffirm our solidarity with Two Spirit and Indigiqueer youth everywhere. 🧡 A 2020 survey on health care access by the Northwest Portland Area Indian Health Board (NPAIHB) found that finances, lack of mental health support, and lack of support groups for Two Spirit and LGBTQ+ communities were the top three barriers to care for American Indian/Alaska Native (AI/AN) Two Spirit and LGBTQ+ young people. A recent national survey of AI/AN folks who identified as transgender found that half of respondents reported a negative experience within a health care system related to their gender identity, including being verbally harassed and being victimized by SA. This month, The Trevor Project is proud to partner with the Indian Health Service to amplify our resources and share the lived experiences of AI/AN youth. To our Two Spirit and Indigiqueer community: The Trevor Project is always available to 2SLGBTQ+ young people seeking support. We’re here 24/7/365, free and secure, on every holiday. Call us at 1-866-488-7368, text START to 678-678, or visit trvr.org/get-help now 🧡 #NativeAmericanHeritageMonth #TwoSpirit #2SLGBTQ #CrisisSupport #YouAreNotAlone #NativeAndLGBTQ #TwoSpiritStrong #IndigenousPride #NativePride

LGBTQ+ youth suicide is a public health crisis that requires both prevention and intervention to understand the root causes so that we can end it once and for all. Hear from Jaymes Black (he/they/she) about how our work at The Trevor Project combines robust programming with an approach of collective action and direct response to meet LGBTQ+ youth where they are, while simultaneously building a future where we can all thrive. 🏳️🌈🏳️⚧ Our work is necessary because YOU are necessary. We will continue to remind you how proud we are that you are alive, and being a resource to you whenever you need us. #TheTrevorProject #LGBTQ #MentalHealth

This year, our research team found a causal link between anti-transgender laws and increased suicide attempts amongst trans and nonbinary people. With the impact of the Presidential election, we’ve witnessed a nearly 700% increase in crisis contact volume related to the election in the days after the vote. One third of those crisis contacts identified as BIPOC LGBTQ+ young people. Hear from our CEO Jaymes Black (they/she/he) in their latest op-ed for Thomson Reuters Foundation’s Context Newsroom on how we move forward with this sobering data to better serve those BIPOC LGBTQ+ youth who rely on The Trevor Project for support. As Jaymes says: “To BIPOC LGBTQ+ young people everywhere: know that there are millions and millions of people fighting for your right to exist and succeed. One step at a time, we will never give up on you.” Read the full article ⬇️ https://lnkd.in/g4tnqUAE #BIPOC #LGBTQ #Election #MentalHealth #TheTrevorProject

Our work moves forward 🏳️🌈🏳️⚧️ In our Town Hall on Advocating for LGBTQ+ Youth Rights and Mental Health Protections, CEO Jaymes Black (they/he/she) broke down our commitment to LGBTQ+ young people as we look to the future. Here’s our commitment to you: We will continue to promote state and federal policies that support and defend queer and trans rights and champion LGBTQ+ youth mental health. This includes advocating for things like healthcare for trans youth, protecting young people from dangerous conversion therapy, and preserving access to specialized services like 988 and The Trevor Project’s suicide prevention lifeline. We’ve got you. We’ve got us. #TheTrevorProject #LGBTQ #MentalHealth
