Manipur – Will the Central Government Stand In the Witness-Box Please? By Avani Bansal & Parika Singh Manipur – the far north-eastern state, has become BJP’s political laboratory – away from the attention of the people from the so called ‘mainland’, while the National media choses to remain silent as the people of the Meitei and the Kuki community adjust to the new ‘normal.’ The Central Government should intervene because it’s not okay for women to be paraded naked. It’s not okay for both Meitei and Kuki women to be raped, torutured, abused. It’s not enough for the National Commission of Women to pay a cursory visit and do nothing significant. It’s not okay for the BJP to say ‘beti bachao, beti padao’, while turning a complete blind eye to the situation of women in Manipur. If India and all of us Indians stay silent now – we have no right to speak of women and their place in our society. It is time, we pay women more than lip service. It is time, we stand up for them. This is not a story of one woman – women in North-east and specifically in Manipur have been fighting for too long. If the Government stands by women, and by human rights and has refused to speak up – it should be prononced “GUILTY”. "Because Women's Stories Need To Be Mainstream"
About us
The Womb is an online newspaper and an e-community for all women issues. While women are about 50 percent of the total population, their voices are still to find mainstream coverage in media. The Womb hopes to be a one stop for all women issues and discussions around gender fluidity in India. We aim to bring together a community of people who are passionate about women rights and gender justice, with the aim to create safe space for women issues in the media which are oft neglected and mostly negative. For our boys and girls to grow up in a world where everyone has an equal opportunity - irrespective of gender, it is important to create this space for women issues and women stories, so that we can offset the patriarchal tilt in our mainstream media and society. We also believe that women stories around the world are similar in more ways than one, and so we aim to bring women stories from around the world on our platform. Write to us : thewombteam@gmail.com

Manipur Report Exclusive : Watch Video Here : https://lnkd.in/dQ92kYzC The catastrophe that is unfolding in Manipur is slow violence without seeming urgency, making it difficult to recognize how much harm has been done until months or even years later. It perpetuates a vicious cycle where people normalize these heinous acts or get desensitized to them. But for the people suffering their day in and day out, there is no escape from this horror. Missing Manipur, Dead Democracy: An Account of Government Failure & People’s Misery By Kashish Singh Silence is the loudest sound. As we entered Imphal Valley, the capital city of Manipur, I felt an eerie silence that couldn’t be mistaken for peace. The beautiful northeastern state is missing from the Map of India. It has become a forgotten state. All one could see while traveling in Manipur right now are scenes of people being hounded out of their lives, rounded up, and herded into camps bifurcated based on community. When we visited the relief camps of both the major communities, Kuki and Meitei, all I could spot was helplessness. Zoned-out faces were looking at the sky remembering their murdered family members, their teary eyes filled with the willingness to return to their homes that now are being burnt and vandalized by an angry mob. Marital Rape Jurisprudence: Inconsistencies Reaffirming Cruelty Based on Age By Lauren Prem Cruelty anywhere is sickening, but cruelty within marriage is ironic and sickening!Marital rape has been a contested issue since time immemorial. The issue resurfaced after the recent Bombay High Court’s ruling on 12th November 2024, wherein a man’s 10-year jail sentence for committing rape on his minor wife, was upheld. https://lnkd.in/dGw4sC5e #maritalrape #Minor #consent #marriage #Law #SupremeCourt

A Female President Remains A Distant Dream For America By Chandrika Arya America, the world’s oldest and most mature democracy, has once again missed the opportunity to elect a woman to its highest office. After Hillary Clinton, this marks only the second time in the nation’s 248-year political history that a woman has managed to contest presidential election. Yet voters did not seize the chance to break the glass ceiling in American politics by electing Kamala Harris as the nation’s first female president. Instead, they paved the way for Donald Trump’s return to the White House. This outcome underscores the fact that the office of the U.S. presidency has remained an exclusive domain for men, with entry for women still restricted by deep-seated gender biases that continue to challenge the political careers of female candidates. https://lnkd.in/dxNkMFUB #kamalaharris #donaldtrump #america #USAElections #Women #candidates #politics

Iraq’s Law Makers Decide To Lower The Consent Age For Girls To 9 By Avani Bansal Are we moving forward or thousands of years back vis-a-vis women’s rights? Iraq’s Parliament is discussing a proposal to reduce the women’s consent age from 18 years to 9 years. This means that, if the law is passed, then women in Iraq could be legally married off at the age of nine years, with equally serious implications on their custody, inheritance, and related personal laws, alongside education and health. There was a time when women’s freedom movement in Iran was seen as an example by the rest of the world – but what we are witnessing today both in Iran and Iraq is a systemic dismantling of women’s rights. In 2022, there was an emergence of hope in the Kurdish ‘Jin, Jiyan Azadi’ slogan giving rise to the ‘Woman, Life, Freedom Movement’ after the tragic death of Jina Mahsa Amini. Amini, like Daryaei, was arrested by Iran’s morality police for wearing her hijab ‘improperly’ and subsequently died in custody. People world over, are now worried for Daryaei meeting the same fate. The Great Indian Wedding Gifts Do straight Indian men truly believe they need to be paid, in gifts, cash, clothes, or otherwise, to marry somebody? Unsurprisingly, many do not treat their wives as partners but continue to dismiss her wishes, feelings, and needs – seeing them as trivial or mere ‘wants’. After all, where the foundation of a marriage is not mutual respect, why on earth would a husband suddenly treat his wife any differently after a wedding thrown in his honor? My only question to all those who continue to threaten, or what they would call strongly request, a woman to show off her parents’ hard-earned money in the form of expensive jewelry and other gifts is: Do you truly believe a marriage built on a foundation of coercion is a marriage at all? https://lnkd.in/d2GQNfS4 #dowry #weddings #marriage #marriagegifts #dowryculture #jewellery #expensiveweddings

Pink Tickets and Free Bus Rides For Women on DTC Buses By Dakshaa A right holds little value if it lacks respect and recognition within society. Women travelling on Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) buses often experience this lack of respect and recognition of their rights from other passengers which undermines their sense of empowerment. Women’s struggle doesn’t begin on the bus, rather it begins at the bus-stand when the driver spots a woman or a group of women waiting. He may choose not to stop the bus and drive straight past them, sometimes even making them run after it which is risky and unsafe. Afterall she is a free-rider so why care? In a group of ticket buyers, a woman will be made to wait to be given her ‘pink ticket’ until all the ticket buyers are given their tickets. After all she is a free-rider so why care?
